Description
This is your chance to own a rare piece of history, the last, and only time I could find this record for sale via auction was in 2004 (thanks Popsike - http://www.popsike.com/REM-REM-NBC-The-Source-ORIG-PROMO-FM-BROADCAST-2LP/4049342774.html), and can’t find another copy for sale online anywhere. The reserve is reasonable, and much less than the last time this record sold. Bid with confidence.
The auction is for REM in Concert - Radio Broadcast for NBC’s The Source, July 20, 21, 22 1984 - 2xLP. This is an original copy and not a repressing or reproduction. The stock number on the labels is NBC 84-28, the hand-etched matrix number reads NBC-84-28-A (and then –B, -C, -D, of course) Also appearing in the runoff grooves is the machine stamped word ALSHIRE.
Grading - I listened to the entire record, it sounds very crisp and clean, no skips or loud noises. The only extra sounds are slight needle crackle at the beginning of each side. This is normal with brand new records on my equipment. You can listen to a sample recorded from this record. I did not alter or apply any filters to the recording, and it is from side 1, which has the slight visual mark.
Side A: VG+ (because of the visual mark, identified below - plays perfectly)
Side B: NM
Side C: NM
Side D: NM
The vinyl is in great condition, great luster and clean. It appears to have limited play, the record came from a small collection of a retired NBC radio executive. One flaw is on side one, where it appears there may have been liquid spilled on a portion of the record (see photo). The mark is very faint, and only on the surface. It does not impact play, and might be able to be removed by a professional record cleaner.
The original labels are clean and intact, there is a minor dirt scuff on the Side 3 label (see photo). The records are stored in clear plastic sleeves, inside a green, unmarked cardboard sleeve. The original broadcast cue sheet is also included with the records, it contains track list, commercial list and broadcast dates, on NBC The Source letterhead.
This is a little more info about the recording from the 2004 auction:
"Here it is, folks – one of the rarest REM collectibles ever, the officially released and band-sanctioned, promotional-only radio show known as “NBC The Source Broadcast.” And along with the band’s BBC transcription LP, it is described by the Goldmine Magazine promo records guide as “one of the most collectible radio shows ever.
If you’ve ever heard a tape of the 90-minute show you know how good it sounds – professionally recorded live by NBC Radio Young Adult Network at Seattle’s Music Hall on June 27, 1984, it was subsequently pressed onto a double-LP set and distributed to a select handful of American radio stations for broadcast on the weekend of July 20-22, 1984 as part of the syndicated show “The Source.”
The labels on each of the 4 sides have the official Source logo plus “R.E.M. Concert Broadcast Date: July 210, 21, 22, 1984”
TRACKLISTING (excluding announcer cues, commercial cues, etc) AS LISTED ON CUE SHEET: Side 1: Moral Kiosk, Driver 8, Catapult, Hyena, Camera, Pilgrimage Side 2: Talk About The Passion, Seven Chinese Brothers, So. Central Rain, Pretty Persuasion, Gardening At Night, 9-9, Wind-Out Side 3: Untitled, Radio Free Europe, Little America Side 4: Burning Down, Pale Blue Eyes, 1,000,000, So You Wanna Be A Rock ‘n’ Roll Star, Carnival, Skank "
