Description

Baron Elmo proudly presents a LP of great documentary interest to those intrigued by the darker side of the human animal: Last Supper, credited to REV. JIM JONES, a 41-minute tape recording from the mass suicides at Jonestown, captured on a TEAC recorder placed beneath the throne of People's Temple leader Jones. This album was first made available by the World Satanic Network System in 1984 as a series of 789 picture discs ("one for each dead body at Jonestown"); this black vinyl version was issued by Psychic TV's Temple label three years later, now long out of print. Some time in the Fifties, Jim Jones started People's Temple in Indianapolis as a church affiliated with the Disciples of Christ, a mainline Protestant denomination. Looking for a safe place from which to avoid the threat of nuclear war, the group moved to California in 1965. Due to their left-wing political and social views and focus on racial integration they attracted many new members, especially in their time in San Francisco. In 1977, the People's Temple relocated to Guyana to found an agricultural settlement more commonly known as Jonestown. Unfortunately, Jim Jones grew increasingly paranoid and mentally unstable in his island kingdom, and a visit by US congressman Leo Ryan in 1978 was his tipping point, leading first to the murder of Ryan, and a few hours later to the infamous mass suicide and murder of more nearly 800 cult members, including Jones himself. This recording of the deadly chaos at Jonestown and Jones' final rantings and ravings is horrifying stuff; not for the timid.
