Hell, Quine, and crew move beyond the punk-powered punch of the debut album (except on the very ‘77-ish sounding “The Kid With The Replaceable Head”) and into uncharted seas that include bluesy ballads, seedy funk, and Stooges-style hard rock. Try to imagine Marquee Moon meeting Raw Power with a rabid Mick Jagger on vocals. An essential ‘coming of age’ punk record (Hell was already in his 30s when this, his sophomore album, was released in ‘82) that may have fared better had it been released in the late 70s amid the then burgeoning punk and new wave explosion. By 1982 that first wave of NY punk, that Hell, Quine, Thunders, Verlaine, et al. were such an important part of, had been replaced by a new batch of young musicians who preferred to indulge in jangle pop, post-punk and adolescent hardcore. Therefore, Destiny Street must’ve been a lonely place to inhabit and in these songs Hell acknowledges that moving on and growing up are inevitable. Indeed, the glorious Hell ballad, “Time”, a song in part about regret, speaks of this inevitability as do the song titles “Going Going Gone” and “You Gotta Move”.
Far more fascinating and adventurous than Blank Generation, Destiny Street is Richard Hell, the bard of punk, at his glorious best.
