Robert Gilligan - Dark Rooms (1987)

While digging through the so called psych downer/loner folk genre I came across a really disturbing and dark record from Austria.

Robert Gilligan was the son of an Englishman and an Austrian woman. In his early twenties he locked himself up in a “Dark Room” in Vienna, wrote songs, went to a studio and recorded an album. The usual way to go for a creative and depressive tween I guess.

The lyrics are dark, suicidal and full of despair and self-loath and like a damp, cold blanket is the music wrapped around. Drums that don’t know where to go, a strummed acoustic guitar and a so fucked up, off key slide guitar that illustrates his sad, wandering thoughts just perfect.

This is not the sad hippie folk from the seventies, this is the harsh reality of cold war years in Europe and 10 years of punk rock. Nikki Sudden, Joy Division, Velvet Underground, the knowledge that Syd Barrett lost his mind and an already dead Nick Drake are the influences of this album.

Gillian killed himself after this record.
