Label/Format: Vertigo – original spiral, swirl format with the first issue large logo on side two. This changed for the third pressing becoming smaller with outline ‘Vertigo’ text directly below it. Also this is a genuine first issue copy as it includes the Philips text at the 6 o’clock position, second pressings omitted the Philips credit. (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light (side one), and less than moderate (side two), mostly fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: VO4 (847200) VTY.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A very good solid weight for any record.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce as a genuine first issue – that is with the large spiral on side two AND including the Philips text credit also on side two at the 6 o’clock position. Only six Vertigo albums included Philips text and all are much harder to find than ones without it. This format was quickly changed as explained further up.

Brief Info: The debut solo Rod Stewart album, a more commercial album to grace the Vertigo Spiral album – this actually charted briefly, but failed to break top 20. A superb album, issued before he really became a household name, it includes the magnificent ‘Handbags and Gladrags’. A lovely cover as well, in the Vertigo mould – the outside graphics are deliberately shot out-of-focus. This is a strong original with a very clean record and sound. The cover has little wear, but has light surface marks seen under angled light. Normal full-on viewing reveals little. A clean Swirl inner is included also and this a copy many fans and collectors will enjoy.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England and includes the Swirl inner. Inside includes the original text warning that states: ‘Copyright subsists in all Vertigo records’. This again was changed on later copies with the word ‘Vertigo’ changed to ‘under this label’, making the first issue covers scarcer as well.

Cover Front: Gentle friction type marks are seen under light, but practically unseen with normal full-on viewing. Clean, fresh and attractive with barely any creasing – one of the Vertigo early classics.

Cover Back: The back has fewer surface blemishes and the lack of ring wear and major rubbing is always welcome news. The odd light crease, but little detracts from this back cover.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A small scuff-rubb on the left edge towards the bottom, that apart, it is practically as made and looks terrific.

Top Edges: Any rub traces very light and faint, both remain very straight

Bottom Edges: Both practically as made and exceptional.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: A superb spine that is close to as-made. Solid, thick and straight with no compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn, any rubbing is tiny near the very top and bottom only. Even the folds have avoided rubbing, scuffs or chips.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and light, all retain very fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round original example of this attractive late 60’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors, but not quite for the perfectionists.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the classic Swirl inner has aged little with just mild hints of darkening. Two crisp and undamaged window circles and the lining clear. Barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This is dated 1/0470 (April 1970).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: side two better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy that has been played a few times, but generally with care as any surface marks are only very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. No penetrating scratches and very few blemishes at all side two – both sides play great. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Rod Stewart classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early ‘Philips’ credit, large Spiral pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only quite modestly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
