ROD STEWART An Old Raincoat Won`t Ever Let You Down (Vertigo VO 4) RARE UK 1st Pressing EX++
RARE very first UK pressing of Rod Stewart`s solo debut "An Old Raincoat Won`t Ever Let You Down" on Vertigo Records (February 1970).
"Rod Stewart, lead singer with the off-again on-again Jeff Beck group, has come up with a superb album of his own. Imagination pervades the music, in the choice of material, in the frequent use of beautiful bottleneck guitar work to draw out the subtler aspects of many cuts (Ron Wood is responsible here), and in the range Stewart himself displays on virtually every vocal.
British albums are often over-done, with good ideas transformed into gimmicks; on this record the music sustains itself through innumerable listenings. A bass solo is not an indulgence here but a perfect lead-in to striking piano; the bottleneck is so sparing that you simply hunger for more of that brilliant sound. What is more amazing is that the musicians make their statements with the same sort of friendly sympathy that recently has been displayed only by the Stones and by the three geniuses of Traffic. Their soul is in their timing. (...)
Stewart's LP is perhaps the only album released this year that reflects something of the feeling of Beggars' Banquet, aside from Let It Bleed. And, unlike so many of the records of 1969, issued with a flood of hype and forgotten after a dozen playings, this one is for keeps. EX+ COVER in very fine overall condition. Please see photos for details.
- Original unlaminated sleeve with slight crease within the gatefold (at bottom center).
- Minor scuffing along the bottom edge.
- Near-invisible crease to the opening edge of the back cover.
- Also includes the original Vertigo Records inner sleeve in undamaged EX++ condition.
EX++ RECORD with a few minor signs of previous play.
- Excellent condition vinyl on both sides, with near-impeccable audio reproduction throughout.
- Lightest general hairlining from sleeve removal only.
- A small thumbnail scuff, as well as what looks (at first sight) like a scratch (1 inch long) on Side One are both absolutely inaudible!
- Original first-pressing swirl-type Vertigo Records labels with one or two spindle lines on each side.
- The matrix stamps in the run-off grooves read as "852684 1Y* 2 420 1 1 1" and "852684 2Y// 1?420 1 1 1".
- This record is certified to be an original, very first UK pressing of "An Old Raincoat Won`t Ever Let You Down", released in February 1970.
