Brief Info: A superb compilation of early Rod Stewart songs – for me, from the absolute golden era of his output. The superstar singer had now really arrived, and this US-made set includes all the classics before he went a little too commercial for my taste. Brilliantly packaged in a gimmick whisky glass shaped cover. The top front is die-cut into a recess eliptical shape and the same graphic is also printed on the inside as seen on my picture. The inner also has gimmickery with a set of live photographs of the man hinged to the right half-size flipback as I have tried to show in my pictures. This being quite fragile and easily torn or damaged, here fully and strongly attached. When the flap is lifted, it exposes all the song titles and credits beneath. To be clear, the picture with the record is the inner that includes the album title at the top, when inserted into the main cover, this is seen within the recess shape. A really lovely design and all those brilliant songs heard to maximum advantage. This is no ordinary compilation, it’s essential for all Rod Stewart fans and collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(–): a single unlaminated quite matt cover with a gentle sheen. This is a lovely gimmick cover made to look like a whisky glass. Made at a time when record cover design and graphics were a work-of-art, that a major reason why vinyl is still so collectable and sort-after in the finest of conditions. Sure, the music is always the utmost priority, but the cover always plays a crucial role, that is something the modern formats will always lack. The top is die-cut and eliptical shaped with the same graphic printed inside the storage area. The bottom corners are angle cut with natural vents to match the gimmick inner sleeve. Only the top half of the edges are closed with large internal very round ended flipbacks. A complex and superb design and probably quite unique. Printed and made in the US and includes the equally superb inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Complex shaped and looking magnificent without anything of any note to fault. This delicate cover has been cover-protected from new by the one owner and I can hardly imagine finding this better. Even the angle-cut corners and eliptical recess giving the open glass affect are crisp and super-neat, totally undamaged.

Cover Back: The back is equally unworn and looks fantastic, the lack of rubbing and ringwear makes for an exceptional piece.

Cover Inside: I rarely grade inside the storage area, but here it’s crucial as it includes yet another graphic. This is again pristine, both the very large rounded flipbacks are equally unworn, crisp and solid.

Top Edges: The lower curved shaped edge is pristine, the more vulnerable top practically the same, any hint of thickening minimal, even viewed end-on. The gimmick inner sleeve/record enters on this perilous edge.

Bottom Edges: Superb and totally devoid of rubbing on a narrow closed storage edge, try finding this better.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Again unworn and crisp, the lower half being open with two separate edges.

Spine and Text: This has the same format as the right edge, half size but with a lot of text information which is ALL pristine Mint, totally unrubbed or worn.

Corners: Multiple shaped corners with rounding in manufacture. Easy again – all are magnificent, crisp and sharp.

Cover Summary: A truly stunning example of this complex gimmick cover, this would have to be been specially made and clearly not all manufacturers were up to the task in 1973. Hence this was made in the United States, that said, this is not a typical American-style cover, the card is typical UK thickness and has the appearance of standard British-made covers. A mini work-of-art that will prove nigh-on impossible to find better.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): being ultra critical with only the merest hint of faint set-off from the dark graphic inside the cover that will contact when inserted. No expense spared again even for the inner sleeve which is superb again. This has similar shaping to the main cover (of course to fit), but with two external angle-cut flipbacks. The right one being hinged for the two-thirds size photographs that lifts to expose the songs and credits. This practically as-made, the flap totally unweakened and solid. Overall clean and fresh on the more fragile live still shots side. The other has another picture of the whisky glass, now almost empty and showing more of Rod’s face and upper body. A crucial piece to the set as the title is included on this side that shows when inserted into the main cover to display the album’s title. Like the main cover, this is near perfect.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): overall due to a couple of surface marks on side two that have NO sound. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any other surface blemishes or marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. This record plays superbly, and visually a lovely record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant 12-song compilation album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Yes a couple of superficial surface marks, but when they are barely any baring on the audio quality, why worry? Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, this is Stewart as his brilliant best with classic songs from the golden era. Overall, this brilliant design will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
