·       This incredible test pressing includes three (3) previously unreleased tracks (Can't Get Away, I'll Slip Away and Street Boy) which were recorded in 1972., but would not see the American release until the 2009 Light in the Attic reissue of 'Coming from Reality", as bonus trackks 

·       PLAIN WHITE TEST PRESSING LABEL WITH ONLY THE ARTIST'S NAME (RODRIGUEZ "SUGARMAN"),  DATE OF PRODUCTION (5-19-75) AND ANTICIPATED SUSSEX CATALOG NUMBER (SRA-8040); THE PROBLEM?  SUSSEX LABEL WAS FORCED TO ABANDON THIS (AND  TWO MORE WORKS IN PROGRESS) WHEN THE FEDS SHOWED AT THE COMPANY'S DOORSTEP AND DROVE THE NAIL INTO COMPANY'S COFFIN VIA COURT ORDER (SEE BELOW FOR DETAILS). THESE THREE RELEASES (SRA-8038, SRA-8039 AND SRA-8040) EXIST ONLY AS TEST PRESSINGS; NO STOCK, RETAIL COPY OF ANY OF  THE THREE HAVE EVER TURNED UP

·       IN MAY OF 1975, FACING MOUNTING LEGAL AND FINANCIAL WOES, RODRIGUEZ'S  LABEL (SUSSEX) PLANNED TO RELEASE A "BEST-OF" ALBUM BY  THE (NOW LEGENDARY) ARTIST.  NORMALLY, THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A HO-HUM AFFAIR, HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE RATHER INTRIGUING COLD FACT THAT THE LABEL PLANNED TO INCLUDE IN THE PLANNED RODRIGUEZ ANTHOLOGY A FEW RARE PRE-COLD FACTS SINGLES AND - EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY - THREE UNRELEASED TRACKS WHICH WOULD NOT SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY (OR, FOR THAT MATTER, LIGHT IN THE ATTIC :-) -  UNTIL 2009.

·       THE PROBLEM?  THE FEDS PUT A KIBOSH ON THE RODRIGUEZ PROJECT.  SUSSEX LABEL UNEXPECTEDLY FOLDED WHEN THE FEDS SHOWED AT THE COMPANY'S DOORSTEP AND CLOSED THE COMPANY FOR GOOD DUE TO DELINQUENT PAYMENT OF CORPORATE TAXES AMOUNTING TO MERE $62,000.  THEREFORE, THE COMPANY CEASED TO EXIST AT SOME POINT BETWEEN  THE DATE THIS PRESSING WAS MADE (MAY 1975) AND THE ANTICIPATED RELEASE DATE OF THE ALBUM, WHICH PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN AT SOME POINT IN JULY OR AUGUST 1975 (ALAS,  THESE DAYS, IF YOU STEAL A FEW BILLION$$$ FROM THE U.S. TREASURY, YOU GET TO RECEIVE A PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF THIEFDOM,  A RED CARPET RECEPTION AT A HOLLYWOOD GALA AND BE PRAISED AS A PHILANTHROPIST);  THE CATALOG NUMBER ASSIGNED TO THE RODRIGUEZ' UNTITLED ALBUM WAS SRA-8040;  THIS WAS ONE OF THE THREE UNRELEASED CATALOG NUMBERS SUSSEX ASSIGNED TO ANTICIPATED RELEASES, BUT WAS FORCED TO ABANDON WHEN THE FEDS SHOWED AT THE COMPANY'S DOORSTEP. THESE THREE RELEASES PRESUMABLY EXIST ONLY AS TEST PRESSINGS; NO COPY OF ANY OF  THE THREE (THE IDENTITY OF THE REMANING TWO TITLES IS STILL UNKNOWN) HAVE EVER TURNED UP; THE LABEL'S FINAL OFFICIAL RELEASE 'THE BEST OF BILL WITHERS; (SUSSEX SRA-8037); WE BELIEVE THAT ALL THREE RELEASES (STARTING WITH SRA-8038 AND ENDING WITH SRA-8040) WOULD HAVE BEEN BEST-OF AND 'GREATEST HITS' TYPE COMPILATIONS, ALTHOUGH SOME MIGHT HAVE CONTAINED UNRELEASED MATERIAL, AS THIS RODRIGUEZ  TEST PRESSING APPEARS TO INDICATE.

·       According to Wikipedia,  " The company (Sussex) folded in July 1975, due to unpaid federal and state taxes amounting to $62,000: the Internal Revenue Service padlocked the offices and auctioned off all assets. Many of the label's master tapes went missing and were presumed destroyed." [end quote].  Well...hmmmm...not quite. The album was indeed released in exactly the same form as this test pressing, but ONLY two years later, and ONLY in Australia, leading us to believe that some of those corporate assets (missing master tapes, corporate documents, etc) which inexplicably went a-missing and which the Feds could not lay their hands on, mysteriously made their way Down Under, well outside of the range of the prying eyes of the US tax enforcement authorities. Lord surely does move in mysterious ways :-)) .  Bottomline? Nothing succeeds like Sussex!

(a)          CAUTION! The vinyl is only VERY GOOD (-)- TO VERY GOOD, with multiple, numerous, small scuffs and scratches which are BOTH visible AND audible. The record plays with light and tolerable BUT AUDIBLE surface noise and occasional pops and clicks. The record plays without skipping throughout. This record WAS play-graded.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER : This reference (test) pressing comes without any custom jacket, and will be shipped in a plain, generic, white cardboard cover (NOT SEPARATELY GRADED, BUT OVERALL IN A REAL NICE CONDITION)
