Label/Format: Major Minor (pressed by Decca) – (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and very attractive, a scarce label seen to near maximum advantage on this very modestly played set. Spindle marks are light+, a little long and spread, but only fine and relatively few in number. They only show under angled light and no ink has been removed with no scuffs.

Cat Number: SMLP 70.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams. A very impressive Decca pressed record.

Country of Manufacture: England – Yes you read right – a genuine UK pressing – try finding another.

Rarity: Very Rare as a UK pressing, few were made and fewer still sold. I truly consider this to be one of the rarest albums I have yet offered on Ebay. This will rarely be seen or offered as a genuine UK pressing (please see my close-up picture of the label to prove and confirm this copy was made in England). The text on the rim is tiny and only just readable to the naked eye and about 4 pt in size.

Brief Info: The word ‘Lost’ is somewhat over-used – okay, hands-up, I can be guilty myself sometimes – I never claim to be perfect by any stretch of the imagination. But I have no qualms whatsoever in describing this obscure album as a genuine ‘lost’ treasure. Few will even be familiar with the name Roger Bunn – in real terms, he was not the luckiest of musicians. He helped found Roxy Music, but left before the band started recording and he just failed to gain a place within John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. The cover describes him as a ‘genius’ – that may be pushing it a bit, but without doubt, he was a gifted composer, lyric-writer, singer and guitarist. It is said, after replacing the Beatles at the Star Club in Hamburg, he asked Paul McCartney if he could record some demos at the Beatles office in London in 1968. The tapes were sent to Philips Records in Amsterdam in error, so the album that eventually surface was made in The Netherlands. Thus, most all copies of this album are Dutch pressed. Eventually, a contract was agreed for the album to be issued in Germany and the UK. German copies occasionally turn up but UK ones are incredibly rare. Not only was the album pressed in tiny numbers, it received scant to virtually no promotional attention at all and simply was lost to the UK market. ‘Piece of Mind’ is a highly creative album and I have never heard anything quite like it before. A hugely original record blending rock, jazz and blues, all with psychedelic overtones – it has some unusual arrangements and utilises orchestra. Somewhat ahead of the game for this time – with the right promotion this should have sold well, but it was given little chance. He was never to be household name, but he met and crossed paths with several major names of the late 60s and early 70s including Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie, who recorded one of his songs but it was never released. For those who want rare and unusual, give this one a try, they will never appear often as a UK pressing and I state again, this is without doubt one fo the rarest truly ‘lost’ gems of the psych period I have ever offered – and in superb condition too.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with a laminated front. This covers the edge folds and finishes on the back via the spine for over half an inch. The back is smooth with a matt finish. Printed and made in England by West Brothers.

Lamination & Front: In terms of wear, this front has little – a tiny chip on the right edge (but look hard). The laminate retains fine shine, clarity and freshness and it remains fully adhered with no lifting. Few marks at all and even under light, minimal traces of any friction rubs or dulling. Record rim impression is also very light and the same for any creasing of which there are few and those present, fine and light, most-all confined to the edges. A very rare UK-made cover for this incredibly rare album, this colourful psych-style front will prove very hard to find better.

Cover Back: The large black area on the right half is highly prone to handling and fingermarks due to the matt finish. This has only very light traces of handling and shows minimal wear to a clearly wear-prone surface. The lack of creasing and ringwear is a massive bonus for a very thin card cover. Minor rub traces are more seen under light and the spine edge has only fine surface hairline creases. A very fine example and possibly one of the best that will ever surface to be offered.

Top Edge: Minimal traces of wear and still very straight.

Bottom Edge: Practically as above, minor thickening of the back panel that is not laminate protected.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear and no feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid but thin, one hairline central crease. Still straight with minimal compression and all text is near perfect and unworn under the mainly solid laminate. One small clip to the ‘M’ in ‘Mind’

Corners: Any tip rubbing is very mild indeed and all retain excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile and incredibly rare English-made early 70’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: although a part of the Decca group, this record has a plain unlined white inner. Mildly aged with a little light toning or tiny tone spots. Minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): not only one of the rarest UK-made albums I have held or had to offer, a superb visual copy too that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. Also to the highest standard by Decca, quite why this failed to get the promotion it needed and justified, goodness knows. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks minuscule and faint. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: A very impressive and unusual album, this near impossible to find UK pressed record plays up to it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing as you would expect. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this rare UK pressing I feel certain. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am positive this record has been played very lightly and with utmost due care, and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Never exposed to old heavy-tracking equipment, this has no pressing noises or groove-wear at all. The complex sound remains fully focused, sharp and precise with copious amounts of detail. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – the true meaning of ‘lost’ classic applies to this one. This copy will prove immensely difficult to near impossible to find better (also using the word ‘impossible’ in true context as well), this merits my highest possible recommendation. Will another UK pressing appear soon?

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
