On offer is a 1969 LP by ROGER SUTCLIFFE called GINGER BLUES on EXCEL SERVICES, catalogue number ES LP 388 (NB This is a private pressing, and the only indication of the catalogue number is stamped on the run-out grooves of the vinyl).
Roger Sutcliffe is a veteran blues guitarist from Yorkshire. Well, the evidence would suggest Yorkshire, but there’s minimal biographical information on the web. A few albums have crept out over the years, including Under the Rubber Eagle and C-Breeze Blues, as well as a book of transcriptions, Living With the Blues. Ginger Blues is his record debut, a private pressing whose label bears the legend “Excel Services, 49 Bradford Road, Shipley, Yorkshire”. It was recorded live at The Royal Oak, Halifax, on Good Friday, 1969. It makes a great calling-card for the fingerpicking virtuoso, mixing blues songs by the likes of Son House, Tampa Red and Furry Lewis with more expansive originals that suggest the influence of John Fahey and Robbie Basho. Sutcliffe’s next release didn’t come until 1976, with the Nick Strutt-produced Death Letter. A private pressing limited to 500 copies, Death Letter seems like a major release in comparison to Ginger Blues.
Consistent low-level scuffing, but nothing too obtrusive, and nothing in the way of pops and tics and no skips; possibly played a few times on a worn stylus rather than suffered obvious mishandling. So the vinyl grades between a Record Collector EXCELLENT and VERY GOOD -
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch.
The sleeve is laminate and flipback or the homemade equivalent of laminate and flipback (it has a uniform shiny surface, with the artwork covering the flipback edges) and is in excellent condition, with straight edges, though with a bit of yellowing along the sides of the front. There is no text on the spine. The labels have no track-listing, just the ‘Excel’ logo (see image) and a neat, hand-written ‘I’ to denote side one.
