This is a rather unusual solo LP. Other than a couple of percussionists (and piano accompaniment on "Day Dream" by Sonelius Smith), all of the music was created by Rahsaan Roland Kirk without overdubs or edits. He plays tenor, stritch, manzello, clarinets, flutes, black mystery pipes, percussion and various sound effects, often two or three instruments simultaneously. The performances are episodic and colorful with plenty of humor and adventurous moments, worthy of repeated listenings and amazement.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY SCOTT YANOW, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

"Roland Kirk has forever been my idol. Some people create a total thing by using the audience as a base of communication, not just playing for themselves or for a certain market — which is the same thing. That's what he did, and that's what I do. Others play the same music live that they played on record which is fine, but it's like who are they doing it for and why? I mean, they've already done it. Why do they go backwards?  Why don't they move into new territory and explore new concepts like Roland Kirk does, or Miles Davis? Music should be alive, in-the-now. It should come out of the moment you're sharing with the audience. Roland has been my idol for years, his rhythmic time, his conception, all of his chops, but his expression is the thing I'm really moved by. He doesn't hold anything back. He gives it all and it's awake and vital, in the moment, not some retread of an album he did ten years ago or even yesterday. Everything great is rooted in spontaneity and Roland Kirk is the epitome of spontaneity".

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 30:1.

(d)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(e)           Stock (commercially released) mono copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some ring wear ; On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 5   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-        Back cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity  (less than 2 square inch in size).

-        A visible water stain affects the area about 1/2 inch wide along the spine seam; there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible and has caused some erosion in the firmness of the cover ,  visible yellowish discoloration, a few minor peel-off marks and a slight warp in the affected area.

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-        The laminated cover has a few air 'bubbles' and wrinkles in lamination (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers

-        The laminated cover has a slight loss (flaking) of lamination along the top seam (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers; lamination is just beginning to peel-off along the opening edge; however, since the underlying layer of the cover is ALSO laminated, the peeled-off spots are only a minor visual distraction

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams (nothing significant)

-        Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
