Records can be called rare for a multitude of reasons, when it comes to unique recordings,
these are the most exciting of all. The Stones debut album was issued in April 1964 , there
was only one song on the LP that had a writing credit that would become famous worldwide,
"Jagger / Richard". They recorded "Tell Me (You're Coming back )" as a Demo only.
This was a completely different , shorter version to the one they re-recorded for this LP.
The Demo version was recorded and mixed , then listened to by The Stones , Andrew Loog
Oldham and Eric Easton who jointly wanted to extend the song's length and record further
takes. The re-recorded version had a running length of 4:06 minutes , longer than the
Demo version that ran for 2:52 minutes. When the full album's recording sessions were
finished , the tapes were assembled to begin pressing the LP. The version of "Tell Me"
on this first pressing was mistakenly the Demo version , forcing a withdrawl of any unsold
copies and a further pressing with the intended , finished recording. How many copies were
sold is unknown , but the handfull that have turned up suggest the numbers were extremely
low. I've been collecting long enough to say this is one hell of a rare record !
Leaving aside the important details for a second , I consider it an exciting prospect and a real privilege to handle and play a record this major and rare.
The labels are in excellent condition , clean with the silver printing
unscuffed. The playing signs show many plays, around average for a near 40 years old record. There are many light surface scratches ,with a few slightly heavier. The record plays through without any major playing faults such as skipping or sticking. There is some audiable surface sound.
The record was lovingly played many times and the cover indicates just how well it's been
looked after for the last 39 years. The front of the cover has deeply glossy laminate and
the colours have remained unfaded. The heavyweight record has left it's
indent , with resulting laminate creases. Nothing too terrible , the laminate is unsplit and
very strong. All Decca's covers from this era are small sized, only slightly bigger than the
record , and these laminate creases are very common. The white background has some
slight ageing with some staining. The blackness of the black printing is good.
The record is still in the original 1964 Decca inner sleeve.
The record was played on my Dual player through Trio amp and Maurdant Short Speakers. This give a true reflection of the playing quality. Playing the LP also confirms it is a 2:52 version.
