This auction is for the EXTREMELY RARE Rolling Stones ''Hot Rocks'' 2LP initial pressing (Nov. 18, 1971), that includes alternate versions of Brown Sugar and Wild Horses from the 1970 documentary, ''Gimme Shelter.''

This record has the name ''Shelley'' and ''11-18-71'' faintly etched in the trail off vinyl on side 4. The labels are blue and silver originals with the boxed London logo and 'Stereophonic' text.

Who Is ''Shelley''?

Could it be a reference to famed poet Percy Shelley? or the Rolling Stones' French press agent June Shelley? I can't tell you for certain, but he or she makes a big difference on the double-album Hot Rocks 1964-1971.

Upon it's initial pressing (Nov. 18, 1971), alternate versions of Brown Sugar and Wild Horses were included on the Hot Rocks master plate. These versions first appeared in the brilliant 1970 documentary Gimme Shelter. Since there was no clear reference to their origin on the album cover, sleeve or label, one must look at the trail-off vinyl (the smooth vinyl located nearest the disc label) and look for the word Shelley and the date 11-18-71.

Shelley

The identifying mark is not easy to locate or read, but the mystery does not end if and when it is found. It seems that this ''alternate pressing'' was soon pulled in favor of a set which contained the single versions of Sugar and Horses. However, Shelley wasn't quite done, as the name reappeared for a short time afterwards with either a later date, or no date at all.

The original Shelley 11-18-71, with the alternate takes is among the top rock LP collectibles.

The alternate “Hot Rocks” tracks could be the same ones played in “Gimme Shelter”, but are both mixed differently and were no way ready for official release.

Brown Sugar - no sax, an added lead guitar which sounds like Keith’s - mixed down as opposed to the movie - weaves in and out throughout the song. Into the sax break, there’s a weak lead and Mick calls out “Y’all taste good!”. At the start of the song the drums come in way too loud and someone hurriedly turns them down.

Wild Horses - vocals are much more “echoey” than the movie version and mixed up front. No background vocals or electric guitars. Jim Dickinson’s acoustic piano playing is is much more prominent.

This is one rare item considering it was only pressed for two weeks 11-18-71 and quickly withdrawn and replaced 12-6-71.

Near Mint (NM or M-) a nearly perfect record. No obvious signs of wear. Only signs of slight handling.
Very Good Plus (VG+)) Some signs of wear, slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect play. Label may have some ring wear, discoloration but barely noticeable. Cover may show slight wear such as lightly turned up corners & slight seam split. LP cover may have slight signs of wear.
Very Good (VG) Many of the defects found in VG+ record will be more pronounced in a VG record. Groove wear will start to be noticeable. Labels may have writing, tape or stickers attached. The same will be true of sleeves or LP cover.
Good(G), Good Plus (G+) Record will play without skipping, but will have surface noise, scratches and visible groove wear. Cover will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear will be evident.
