Label/Format: Decca – Turquoise, Large unboxed original type with ear logo and deep ridged. ffrr (Full Frequency Range Recording).

Label Condition: Lovely looking, very clean examples with strong colour. Only showing only light+ spindle marks that have only modest visibility with normal viewing – and in context for the popularity of this record I consider these to be way below ‘average’. I took my pictures directly infront of a window to show all the details as best I could. These spindle marks appear emphasised by such clinical light, but I wish to hide nothing and represent exactly what to expect. Definitely one of cleaner examples of this early pressing I have yet seen in mono. Importantly, there are little traces of wear around the actual spindle hole area which is an even clearer indication for lower usage. It’s difficult to find Stones 60s albums with such minimal wear which is a massive bonus for any mono record. Scanning silver ink is difficult, thus photographs this time, I hope they show the details you need to see, and hopefully too the low matrix numbers, side one being a prized ‘1A’, the other a ‘3A’.

Rarity: Scarcer as a pre-69 pressing especially in anything like decent conditions. Like most Beatles albums, Stones records sold in vast quantities too. The actual album is quite common, but the vast majority of copies will be much later pressings - this title was repressed many times, most seen are boxed. This mono record is very early and has one side with a 1A matrix and these are definitely more difficult to find. This example too is a pre-69 copy with the solid back with no hole and book attached to the gatefold cover. Later ones were detached being an insert rather than fixed booklet.

Original Year of Release: 1966.

Matrix Nos: XARL 7503-1A and XARL 7504-3A. The stampers are unclear with 4 character per side. I do not like guessing but the first digit on both is a ‘2’, which is clearer.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Not just a compilation album, far from it. These Stones early classic singles are all in beautiful mono and they never sounded better than in this dynamic and detailed mode, many appearing for the very first time at 33.3 rpm - few appeared on the earlier UK studio albums. Always one of the most beautifully packaged Decca albums, this early mono example has the booklet strongly stapled into the centre - later copies were separate booklets. This very early copy does NOT have the small peep-hole mono/stereo indicator on the back of the sleeve, they came later in 1969 and this includes its early lined inner, the blue text on white type NOT the red mono bag that again came later. Another important note for this album is the UK copy varied considerably from the US version with a different cover and track listing - the UK version being vastly superior (in most people’s opinion - that said both are still essential for the serious Stones collector). Another curiosity is the latest CD reissues did NOT include a UK version of this album, a bizarre choice of omission, why were not both released? This is a lovely all round early made copy with a lovely and impressive cover that looks great with very little wear at all. The record has largely escaped any noteworthy marks except on the first song. This has a few surface marks in one area but good news, NO sound, any other marks are very fine and faint surface traces or ultr fine hairlines that are also superficial. Early mono copies rarely gets seen looking (and sounding) this good – a high percentage of heavily played, badly scratched or even trashed totally. Visually attractive and playing very well indeed with no damaging groove-wear distortion that blights so many caused by those heavy thick pickups from way back. Not a perfect copy but an very nice one indeed that many Stones fans could have been waiting for.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear and Damage: Very High: with single thickness card on the front, this often suffers badly from creasing and laminate issues. Also the book is regularly seen pulled or detached totally, often with torn and creased pages. Ones this attractive with so few issues are difficult to find.

Cover Grade and Format: Excellent, and a strong excellent too, given the facts, this is arguably better still, this is a very delicate cover as most will know. A gatefold format with stapled booklet in the centrefold. Laminated with Clarifoil front and back and NO peep-hole on the rear - this is the rarer very early version that never included this mono/stereo indicator, this is the correct dedicated TXL 101 Mono cover. Printed in England by Robert Stace. A very attractive example of the highly damage-prone sleeve, wear and blemishes are minor and this is way, way above average found these days. Includes its lined blue text on white inner also. The inside back has two circled letters ‘CJ’, either an owner’s initial or a retailers reference. It’s quite small and neat and situated near the top right corner.

Lamination: Front & Back This is clean and fresh and has a more semi-gloss sheen rather than an all-out gloss shine which on this cover is correct. With just two very small spine lifts – one each side – this is superbly adhered and few will show less. Clarifoil well-known for adhesion issues, this has little. A few fine spine edge hairline creases few avoid and considering how thin this front card is, the lack of heavy creasing has to be a real bonus. Any marks are few and faint and small, any chips or surface blemishes are few indeed and little spoils this vintage artwork that still looks really clean and attractive. The famous fisheye band artwork itself is practically unblemished. Even under angled light, there is minimal traces of any friction rubs or dulling, again unusual on such an old cover. A few mild corner rubs and minor creases, but again, compared to many, these are minor. Overall, both front and back are visually appealing and this can be held and enjoyed to something like near maximum.

Cover Inner Gatefold/Booklet: Very nice indeed, all the six pages are in great condition with no tears, grubbiness or creasing – the odd tiny edge burr if being critical or faint finger mark trace maybe but people did actually look at these – on context, these are amongst the cleanest, clearly little handled I have seen for quite some time. This is so often found in bad shape, even the later copies, often stained, loose or damaged. The book pages are only paper thickness, not card, and so prone to wear (and tear). Well these are all attractive and the lack of obvious numerous fingermarks on the highly revealing surfaces is refreshing. Both original staples are like new and unloosened, bent or tarnished. These are very fragile and do NOT penetrate into the spine to extra strength, thus so many are seen with the book totally detached.

Top and Bottom Edges: Very prone to burring and feathering but these two delicate pair of edges have largely avoided any significant amounts, the top especially is mostly clean and neat with any burring minimal. The front of the bottom is very neat indeed and this rarely so. The back has thickened a little but any burring modest. This being the resting edge, few will avoid some, this one sees the back panel slightly proud of the inside, so avoidance is near impossible but any evidence is only really seen with end-on viewing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The thin front is clean and sharp with barely any wear. The back opening is very slightly thickened with minimal burring or softening, still very neat in context. All edges are guaranteed untrimmed.

The Spine: Emphasis has to be made that this spine is only single thickness card but is very solid and mostly very straight with any compression minimal. Folded squarely so the right edges meeting up perfectly together and parallel. This early cover has its single unique mono TXL 101 reference number, the later versions had dual mono/stereo numbers on the spine. All the text is pristine perfect under the very solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: The spine pair show little wear but have a couple of small tip area semi-creases. Obviously, the right four will be more vulnerable due to thinness and record storage usage. The rear pair have little wear, just minor tip creasing. The front pair have small tip rubs but remain quite firm and unfrayed with little creasing.

Cover Summary: A very fine, real solid excellent example of this very fragile 60’s cover (very arguably better compared to many I have seen in shocking conditions, many of which being later format too). This will prove hard to find significantly better, this is a real delicate item and don’t forget older than most found. Not perfect but blemishes only minor, but look around and see if this turns up looking much nicer than this one. A strong item that should please many, if not most collectors, but not quite for the connoisseurs.

Inner Sleeve: This vintage inner is polylined and includes a very neat undamaged window and clear lining. The seams have glue browning and the whiteness as darkened consistently all over, thus aged in that respect. All the edges are unsplit (or repaired) and there is hardly any creasing. It has a date code of 126 (December 1966). For lack of wear it can easily grade EX++, but in terms of darkening it’s more Very Good. Many collectors will consider an inner this great age to look just right.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Minus the mark on track one I would have not hesitation in grading this vintage mono record Excellent. It shows little anyway so I will grade EX(-) and EX. A very fine early mono example of this very popular Rolling Stones album. Let’s get this into true perspective: this band’s albums were played and played often, commonly into submission, only seldom do copies show up that show only modest surface marks and hairlines. This lovely vintage record has no real scratches in what I deem the real meaning of the word, a penetrating needle mark that sounds. Light marks, odd light surface scuffs or hairlines are almost the minimum you can expect from a record like this unless near unplayed copies can be found – and although the exist, they are very elusive and seldom made available and if so, only at very high costs. Badly marked, worn, even trashed copies are far more the normal for this very popular band and this title in particular which was one of their most popular for obvious reasons. This record is very clean, retains a fine shine, jet black and very solidly pressed. A copy with modest and way below ‘average’ plays on all the evidence and this is reitterated by very fine overall sound quality. A title that takes no prisoners for ruthlessly revealing distortion and obvious groove-wear or damage and this has practically none at all and sounds great. Visually a very fine solid example, these popular albums in mono are just so hard to even find in a genuine Very Good condition let a lone much better and this should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This gateway back to the 1960s plays up to and most all above its high visual grading with little to fault. Strong, dynamic mono sound free of any distortion that often blights records like this. The sound for most is sharp and clear. Rolling Stones songs in quality mono are a joy to behold and for me are way better than the stereo versions. This was the mono age and these songs recorded as such. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed with few blemishes overall. The odd gentle tick or crackle trace is near impossible to avoid on such a record but little here will offend any but the most intolerant of listeners and this was a real pleasure to hear again in glorious original mono. The very first song on this album, ‘Have You Seen…’ is a severe test right from the very outset, very loudly mixed with rasping brass and many mono copies simply fall apart immediately with badly echoey sound and horrible broken-up distortion, even this track sounds clean, focused and blemish free, that too with a few marks as mentioned above that are ignored. This copy has clearly been played but has suffered no major wear or degrading and importantly still sounds great even on one of the most revealing turntables ever made. Obviously a record like this was never designed for playing on a high-end stereo deck but this record gave a lovely account of itself overall with any blemishes light, minor and very brief. Nothing of any note poilt my pleasure when play-grading this classic, these songs simply refuse to age and truly put modern pop into its true perspective. The odd blemish yes, but blemish is the right word, this early copy will prove difficult to find significantly better in wonderful early original mono.

End Piece: Probably the first ‘serious’ album I ever bought (not this copy though) way back on a holiday with my parents in Bournemouth, so this album always has a special place in my memories. Every track here is a classic and mostly sounds very clean and precise on the slowed down speed. This, in my opinion, blows away the stereo version, some of these songs sound pretty fake on the stereo copy. This mono record, when played at volume can simply thrill - the sounds embedded in these vintage grooves are the real thing and no remastering ever quite matches the sound and feel of the early vinyl formats, they act as a time-tunnel back to the glorious days when ‘pop’ music quality was at an unsurpassed high. Personally, I would rather enjoy these diamonds on a long-player rather than scratchy old singles. This gem of a record should please many collectors and I can strongly recommend it.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
