Label/Format: Decca – original first issue with the large text SKL 5065 number. Later ones had this number in much smaller type. I have done a direct comparison to a second issue (still with two -1W matrix ends) and the difference is significant. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both in beautiful clean conditions: very clean, fresh and highly attractive. These have the intense dark colour and small size circle format. No wear whatsoever around the hole rims and a very tight fit on my Linn spindle. Spindle marks are very few, light and faint and clearly this record has hardly been played. Indeed, side one has hardly any at all.

Cat Number: SKL 5065.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 151 grams. Quite a substantial weight for this first issue. Decca records rarely made thin records, but later pressings would rarely match this impressive weight.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Moderate in theory, most all Rolling Stones albums sold well but it’s the conditions that make the difference and genuine first issues are significantly harder to find, especially hardly played. Early original copies should have -1W/-1W matrix endings, but that even that alone does not confirm a first issue. I have a second issue copy in stock as well that has the same endings but inside a later pressed cover. The earliest copies also have large type catalogue numbers on the label at the 3 o’clock position, the width of this type being 17 mm – the width of second issues is 14 mm. Also original copies have a Decca inner with Foreign patents pending text and UK Patents Applications. Also a date code of 8-70 (this was issued on the 4th September 1970), some may possibly have had 7-70 inners as well. Original covers vary quite considerably to seconds. Firstly, the front has a narrower deep purple box around the edges and was printed by Upton. Other covers were printed by Robert Stace and Clout & Baker and the box border wider and the colour changed to a deeper shade of blue. When put side-by-side, the difference is easily seen. Also first printed covers were fully laminated. This album on offer has all the criteria of a first issue with the conditions described below.

Brief Info: Most interested collectors will know all about this title already and needs no introductions suffice to say, it was their first live album from 1970 and one of the most famous live sets of all time. The record is a beauty, hardly played and possibly the best pressed and cleanest sound I have yet experienced from this title. It plays with nigh-on pristine sound and totally encaptures the occasion perfectly.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single fully laminated cover and printed and made in England by the Upton Printing Group. The front with the deep purple border (again, later ones were a deeper shade of blue and had different printer credits).

Lamination – Front & Back: The Clarifoil laminate retains a rich shine, freshness and clarity with any rim impression small and light at the bottom of the front where there is a trace of surface dulling seen under light. Little else in that respect at all. Clarifoil has a reputation of lifting and covers that have it are rarely seen devoid of any. Here, only the front left spine edge is affected with a narrow strip lift that does not even exceed the deep purple box. The back has unusually avoided any lifting. So in terms of this, only mild and light and the non-adhered strip has NOT broken or cracked, so still solid and secure. I do not consider natural lifting on laminate, which always tightens over the years, to be real wear and the only reason this splendidly attractive cover did not get a higher grading is due a few mainly light surface creases on the edges. Like most Decca-era Stones covers, these were made with quite thin card and all seem prone to this. But little detracts from this first issue cover that has nothing nasty to offer.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both neat and straight with full laminate retention. Any thickening to the back panel end is very slight indeed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any hint of wear at all. Both sides have the unprotected strip intact which is clean, very neat and unchipped. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Little short of perfect: solid and straight with minimal compression. The ends are very gently tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn and beautifully centred under the very solid laminate and even this is shiny.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and light and all retain very fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: Great artwork and nice to see a genuine original in this very fine condition. Attractively fresh and shiny, it should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: with barely any real wear but naturally aged with less than moderate darkening. Some corner creasing but far from excessive and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This has the all the correct criteria simply because it IS the original inner. So small window circles which are both pristine as made and the lining ultra clear and barely even crinkled. This is correctly date-coded 8-70 and has the British patent No 800513 with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text. Also UK Patents Applications No. 43212/68..

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and this being ultra critical and the merest whisker of my highest grading of Mint(-) and a very impressive visual copy. Never easy finding original Stones albums so clearly little played and well looked after. Very clean with fine shine, intense black and heavily pressed and above the average weight of most found. A very early pressing indeed, never issued unboxed, Decca did not lessen the quality of its records from whatever period they were issued – that said, this is an exceptional weight. A copy hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces when scrutinised under bright angled light being few, ultra fine and faint. I have an intense light lamp on my desk and reveals most all of any blemishes however minor. A one owner from new record and without doubt little played and then on a quality stereo system. Visually a super record that should please most all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic record plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. This is a classic live set and sounds just perfect for it’s era and will rarely be heard cleaner or better than this. Barely any surface sound, no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing as you expect from Decca, arguably the best record makers ever. No piledriver thick, heavy stylus have ruined this one, I doubt if its been on a turntable more than a couple or three times, just the way modern collectors want them. Few copies will match or better this copy I feel sure, remember this is a still a record into it’s forty-second year, hardly a spring chicken in vinyl terms, but this blows away the years. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – ultimate detail, delivery and realism. This record will prove very difficult to find better and merits my strongest recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
