Visual grading
Overall this vinyl is very clean and whilst there are some faint hairlines and a couple of small scratch type marks on S1 it is certainly better than many No 2s you see of this age. There is some spindle wear as you would expect but this vinyl has stood the test of time very well and will not disappoint.
Play grading
'Everybody Needs Somebody To Love' plays very clearly for a vinyl over 50 years of age. There is intermittent light static/crackle in the background and one stick in the middle but there are no clicks or pops. 'Down Home Girl' again has only light static in the background and the version of 'You Can't Catch Me' is superb. There is no interference and no distortion whatsoever. I would go so far as to say it grades as Near Mint- the quality is that good. For a quiet track 'Time Is On My Side' plays with excellent clarity and with only some light 'background' now and then. There are a small number of dust ticks near the beginning but there are certainly no intrusive clicks or pops. The intro on 'What A Shame' plays so clearly and with hardly any interference, a wonderful listen. This track easily grades as Ex+ with the audio quality not decreasing throughout. 'Grown Up Wrong' ends the side with superlative audio and no 'background' at all.
'Down The Road Apiece' has a little static at the start and then impresses with great clarity and hardly any other interference. 'Under The Boardwalk' plays exceptionally well for a relatively quiet track. For a 1965 mono record to play with such clarity is a rarity today. There is just the lightest of static in a handful of places but there is no intrusive crackle, clicks or pops at all. The playback here really is of an excellent standard. The remaining tracks play equally as well with no obvious interference. There is a little distortion on 'Off The Hook' and 'Suzie-Q' but this is probably due to a mono record being played through a stereo system.
In summary this first pressing plays with excellent audio overall. Yes it is a shame about the stick on 'Everybody...' but this is the only real interference of any note. Some static/light crackle here and there but for a red unboxed vinyl to play with such clarity and depth is quite a rarity and to reiterate there are no clicks or pops whatsoever.
Cover
The laminated 'James Upton' cover is the non-flipback version and as stated has the infamous 'Blind Man' text. The edges and thin pinched spine remain in superb shape with barely any rubbing and only a little wear on the corners. The spine is also still 100% legible. The laminate itself has no lifting or splits just some creasing towards the bottom right and a few minor ones around the edges. The opening edge is generally very clean with only faint age related marking here and there and light ringwear. There are no pen marks/writing anywhere. The opening edge only has a small amount of handling wear at all.
Inner sleeve
The die-cut plain white inner sleeve has a couple of small splits on the centre hole and a stamp from where it was first purchased back in the day!
The labels
They are in great shape with no writing on just some spindle wear. As can be seen this is one of the earliest 'grooved' labels with 'Made In England' and the Times New Roman font style. The KT tax stamp is printed on the top of the run out grooves on each side.
