Honestly, for rock 'n roll this is the one that captures it. "Sticky Fingers," from it's iconic cover to the guitar crash and bash of Keith Richards and Mick Taylor, is the perfect representation of raw sleazy rock 'n roll. When you've been around as long as the Stones have it's hard for people to remember just why the Stones are so revered. The answer lies in four essential records, 1968's "Beggar's Banquet," 1969's "Let It Bleed," 1971's "Sticky Fingers," and 1972's "Exile On Main St." In this era rock music, to quote Homer Simpson, "achieved perfection." In these four albums lie everything you need to know about rock music, from it's blues roots, to its sexual imagery, its debauchery and rebellion. Of the four aforementioned albums, it's "Sticky Fingers" that sticks out. Most people would pick "Exile" or "Bleed" as the masterpiece, but as great as those albums are, for me it's Sticky Fingers that I come to most often. Everyone that listens to classic rock radio or who has purchased a Rolling Stones compilation should be familiar with "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses." However, it's the album cuts that make "Sticky Fingers" a definitive rock album. Many people, including some of the Stones themselves, feel that the line up on this album is the best line up the Stones ever had. (No disrespect to Brian Jones or Ronnie Wood) The reason is the spectacular lead guitar of Mick Taylor, which is on full display on tunes like "Sway," "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" and "Bitch." "Sway" in particular is an excellent showcase for Taylor. The tune is a lament about "that demon life" that's "got you in its sway," and it features two guitar solos from Taylor. The first solo shows off his prowess with the slide guitar, while the outro solo is a dramatic building solo that is complimented by subtle and faintly soaring strings. "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" has an iconic Richards riff to open things up and it closes with a fantastic latinesque jam that feature a great sax solo followed by another classic Taylor solo. "Bitch" is the Stones best use of a horn section. The horns really punch out of the mix as the guitars battle for prominence. Its a great use of musical tension. "I Got the Blues" is the Stones doing Stax and it includes a soulful organ solo from Billy Preston. "Dead Flowers" does a great job of capturing the world weariness of the best country music, as Mick sings in his faux southern American accent, "I'll be in my basement room with a needle and spoon and another girl to take my pain away." "Moonlight Mile" closes the album on a somber note with some gorgeous string arrangements. The Stones next record continues and expands the sound established here, but no record, rock or otherwise beats it.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

A NOTE ON ANDY WARHOL ALBUM COVERS

Warhol did album covers throughout his entire life - the most well-known being the 1967 Velvet Underground album featuring a banana and the 1971 cover for The Rolling Stones' album Sticky Fingers, co-designed with Craig Braun, which featured an image of a man's crotch in a pair of jeans with a functioning zipper. The Nations Nightmare was probably the first album cover featuring Warhol's work. Concidentally, it dealt with the use of recreational drugs - a theme that would often be associated with Warhol and his entourage throughout the 1960s as a result of films like The Chelsea Girls which showed Brigid Berlin shooting up speed on camera. Warhol would also became known for his use of transvestites in his films. In approximately 1952, the same year that he won the award for The Nation's Nightmare, Warhol also did some of his earliest drawings of a man in drag when he sketched the photographer, Otto Fenn, dressed as a woman. Warhol's drawings were similar to photographs that Fenn had taken of himself dressed as a woman.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          CAUTION! The vinyl is only GOOD TO GOOD+, with multiple, numerous,  scuffs which are BOTH visible AND audible. The record plays with bearable BUT AUDIBLE surface noise and some pops and clicks. The record plays without skipping throughout. This record WAS play-graded.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 300:1.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD- (VG-).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        The opening side (front panel only) was taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Cover has a partially split spine (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the spine

-        Visible shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams

-        Cover has some visible ring wear; On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 5 (front side) and 6 (back side).

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-        Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.

-        The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on both sides (apparently,  from abrasion suffered from another cover's zipper)

-        1-inch tear noted on the "buckle" of the man's belt.

-        Small piece of chipboard (roughly 1/2 square inch) missing above the belt's buckle.
