Hi, I am Mike, now 51. Old enough to remember the golden era of original, high quality music, bands, artists.

Also records from the 1960s and 70s bought from the shops from new, I have been a music collector and enthusiast for over 37 years now. We all wish we could turn back the clock and buy those wonderful brand new records from the 60s and 70s, but alas, this is not possible; so I always try to offer the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. No vinyl/music lover really would choose to buy second-hand, but this is only way now to own these valuable, prized and elusive items now. I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. I try, to the best of my ability to describe as accurately and as honesty as I can all items I offer for sale with all the relevant information I can think of to help any potential bidder and collector. You may notice I only submit records sparingly on Ebay - on average ONEADAY, a couple more at weekends if time permits, hence the name - time rarely allows for more as I Play-Grade virtually every record I offer in their entirety, not just bits to guess a grade - visuals alone do not always tell a true or full story. I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested reader – I am very fussy and my buyers have the right to be too. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in stunning near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. I cannot guarantee one hundred percent is exact colour matching for covers - this depends on the lighting at the time and that is out of my control, but I feel sure most items will be very close to the actual real item. If any picture I take looks more flattering than the actual item for any reason, I will clearly state the fact in the advert and vice-versa. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT mailers) with the record(s) REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with TWO massively thick stiffners for even extra protection and bubble wrap if deemed necessary. These stiffners are the thickest possible and custom supplied for ‘Oneadayrecords’ – these are NOT commercially available and you will not have seen thicker protection anywhere. The cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW heavy duty soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my Moth Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. Printed address labels are used as well as ‘Fragile’ tape for that extra professional touch for the packet. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. Label, format and Conditions: Turquoise Decca unboxed format. Lovely attractive examples, super clean with clear defined text but impossible to scan as the silver ink reflects hence a photograph this time. Spindle marks are very much on the lighter side of moderate. These are much finer than seen from most mono record players and have very little visibility with normal viewing. Barely any wear traces around the hole rim. Overall a really lovely unboxed pair and so hard to find on mono copies.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: A very early mono copy with 3D cover and psych inner is a rare find these days. Although this copy has a few fine surface marks and has clearly been played a modest few times, the sound quality overall is astonishingly good and plays with great detail and typical mono dynamics. This is a very difficult mono record and one of the most essential in that format ever made with a very different mix and sound. The 3D cover, a mono original of course, is superb and one of the best I have seen for some considerable time. The inner also looks lovely and for once is unsplit with no repairs. A copy like this is very hard to find these days.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This Stones gem will forever be compared to The Beatles Sgt Pepper - their 1967 psych album, many of the major acts of this time were producing psych records. Satanic Majesties has never fully received the full recognition is really deserves. For sure a massive change of direction from the previous albums and it all may have been too much for many of their fans. Often described as a ‘flawed classic’, but I have heard few flaws myself. A brave and compelling album, weird (by their standards) for sure but many moments and songs of true genius - ‘She’s a Rainbow’ and ‘2000 light years from Home’ always sound so much better on this ‘proper’ album rather than compilations. This album is a barrage of sound with brass and effects and for The Stones, a real one-off. For me it’s one of those album that’s totally essential in both the mono and stereo mixes as both sound very different. The mono version is more robust and solid with greater bass depth and solidity. This stereo version is dynamic and has wonderful imagery and presence. Take the brass blasting out of the speakers at the very start of side one - it hits you full in the face, and the album just does not let up - this is a very intense experience. Play this album loud and you will be left spinning. This album is so often seen in a trashed state, especially in mono, or at best just heavily played (a sign of those times) with worn sound qualitities. The massive sound and complex production embedded in these grooves always made this one of the most prone to wear records ever made in this period. Early heavyweight record players, so often mono, simply wore quickly this most fragile of recordings - the sounds, the high frequencies especially, always fare very badly with massive high frequency clipping running into moderate, even severe distortion. I have yet to hear a copy of this that plays absolutely ‘perfectly’ in mono throughout, but this gives a very fine performance with only a few minor blemishes and any surface sounds are very few and infrequent, light and minimal and is devoid of any significant pops or clicks, another real bonus. This copy plays with truly astonishing sound and detail and portrays few traces of groovewear. A little clipping and ‘reverb’ is almost impossible to avoid on the very intense start to side two but when the music starts, it goes. It’s quite clear to me this record has been played modestly with very clean playing surfaces with little more than light surface marks and fine hairlines that have no effect on sound. Such is the stunning sound reproduction on this early mono copy I swear any unwanted sounds simply drifted over my head or were lost in the massive sound mix and I say again there were hardly any anyway. This record is exceptional and defies its age and potential groove-wear, not really designed to be played on modern stereo equipment but this gives a fine account of itself throughout with any sound degrading modest and light. The album’s sheer intensity and brilliant content will not allow you sit there and wait for any minor blemishes. This record when played on any genuine ‘hi-fi’ deck will literally blow you away and no other format will even run this close and the mono format remains exclusive to the vinyl format. The record comes in its original psych inner, a highly respectable one too with just a little mild creasing – a very delicate thin paper inner that was not lined, its seldom seen this good. The 3D cover is beautiful and will seldom be found better. For collectors wanting a very fine, if not pristine all-round mono example of this famous old psych album, well this is worthy of the highest consideration.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: Very prone to damage and warping badly to the adhesion of the 3D picture on the cover front. Atmospheric conditions e.g. humidy, cold and heat react with the glue and make this cover bend, often severely so it becomes mishapen and even badly bowed. Few of these will ever lay dead-flat these days – this one DOES.

Cover Condition and Details: Strong EX++ and bar from the almost mandatory light surface marks on the front graphic, I would graded it Mint(-). The very famous 3D cover, a gatefold format, laminated front and back. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace. This is the very first format, original, no peep-hole mono/stereo indicators, they came later in 1969. Without doubt one of rocks greatest ever covers and this a truly beautiful example. A real beauty, few available examples will better this significantly, one with little wear and no misshaping or bowing to the picture. Like the record this gets trashed all too often and is easily damaged. I have even seen examples with the 3D picture that has clearly been restuck after being pulled-off, usually with pretty disastrous results.

Cover Lamination: The best I have ever seen even counting stereo versions. This is ultra clear and shiny and has hardly any marks or creases at all. The back is incredible and has to be seen and is practically as new. All fully adhered bar one tiny blister on the front bottom left corner, no dulling or friction rubs, try to find this much better.

Cover Front: The 3D picture looks very nice indeed and no milkiness around the edges some are seen with. It has a few fine surface marks only really visible with angled viewing. With ‘normal’ straight-on viewing barely anything shows the this retains lovely rich colour and has tremendous 3D effect. No doubts whatsoever, this has never come adrift and been restuck and this is adhered fully square on the front’s surface. Yes I have seen some twisted examples. This has not chipped at all and the edges are crisp and very sharp. Lovely psych artwork, this really looks strong to the eye. Few avoid some surface marks or blemishes and often these are major scuffs and deep scratches, this has nothing like that, the marks present on this example are very fine and unobtrusive. Another important factor is the picture is still stuck fast and is perfectly flat with no bowing of the cover’s front. As explained above, many of these bend and warp with age, humidity and storing conditions can be a huge factor in this. Once these bend, rarely will they flatten out again and I have seen some examples before that have alarming bows in them and they do look less than wonderful. Remember this is a very early example, now well over 40-years-old, it’s in exceptional condition and really does still look lovely – almost connoisseur standard I would suggest and most collectors will enjoy it.

Cover Back: Absolutely stunning, jaw-drop gorgeous, this is practically pristine and would be undergraded at Mint(-).

Cover Gatefold Inner: Beautiful artwork and looking magnificent with hardly a blemish to a near perfect design. Worthy of note too, the left side is very flat and unbowed, remember, this is a single thickness front and carrying some substantial weight in the 3D graphic so this is fairly unusual too. Both surfaces have a mildly textured surface apparent with close viewing.

Top Edges: The fragile front is crisp and sharp with no thickening. The back is lovely and any rub traces very small and light.

Bottom Edges: The front very slightly thickened but not burred. The back has very light surface rubs in places only. All edges exceptional given the format and age.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front neat and clean, one small, very minor burr trace to the centre if being somewhat critical, this does not even show on the front. The back opening edge is very neat and sharp.

Spine and Text: A fantastic spine and even this retains a great shine. Solid and robust, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meeting up together well and parallel. No damage or wear at all and all text is pristine, unworn and clear under the solid, unpeeled laminate. Try to find one better with the word ‘MONO’ on it.

Corners: Minimal wear on any, with hardly even any tip rubs, all retain very fine shape and superb definition.

Cover Summary: A truly beautiful mono example and I cannot remember having a better one to offer. A few marks to the 3D graphic but how many will exist with none these days? This apart, barely anything else to really fault, an exceptional example that will please most collectors.

The Inner: worthy of an EX+, as delicate an inner as you will ever find, similar to the ‘Pepper’ inner and just as fragile. Made from ultra thin paper, non-lined, this is rarely seen untorn or split. This is clean with full original rich colour retained, this inner is often seen with ringwear from the heavy record that was still usually kept inside, not a wise practice as this will eventually get damaged or badly split but that was more apparent after it happened. The record now is kept inside a brand new polylined inner. This one shows no rubbing or any ink-loss. The three sealed edges are still that – sealed – yes no splits and NO repairs either. This is very unusual to say the least. The top opening edge is neat with only minor light creasing. The bottom corner areas have creased a little as most always do but what is so nice about this psych inner is the rich colour and lack of real wear, this retains real freshness and still looks very nice to the eye. With so many of these written-off or ultra tatty and ripped to pieces (or simply missing altogether), this is a very fine example that complements the cover perfectly.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Strictly EX(-) but it’s really better than that. A copy with a modest few fine surface marks and odd minor surface blemish and hairlines but nothing that really resembles a ‘scratch’ proper and practically everthing is ignored. This is a top quality Decca pressing, with thick vinyl and deeper, wider grooves. The music information lies beneath these non-penetrating blemishes and sound quality is very high indeed. An early pressed unboxed mono copy that has a lovely shine and is still intense black, I feel very sure this has not been played too many times. With so many seen covered with ugly deep scratches on washed out vinyl covered in grimy fingermarks and laden with dust, this copy is almost a breath of fresh air and such available copies are at a real premium these days. A copy that has avoided any needle drops or damage, this copy tracks effortlessly and perfectly and is very flat, these early pressings will not be easy to find much cleaner these days.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This record plays with astonishing sound that is quite unique. Very powerful, rich and detailed mono sound that gives a very different performance to the stereo version. Big and bold in dynamics and unique mix and production, both formats are essential. It has terrific audio quality, any sound blemishes are ultra mild as already mentioned in my preamble - I state this critically, most listeners will love this copy. I am, I hope, a discerning listener and careful grader (I have been told on several occasions I actually undergrade – but I can live with that). This record would please me to own, keep, and enjoy. The sound on this album is special and I found any minor blemishes were blown away by all the positives of which there are many. Even the quieter passages play well with little unwanted. Slight clipping just noted on the odd minor difficult passage, most noteable on the very start to the very critical opening to side two that few will avoid. The voices are recorded loud and forward and they just seem to clip on just about every copy around. A minor and brief blemish only but typical. Just holding that vintage cover and hearing the in-built power of this vintage mono Decca record will please. Play this album loud - the music and sound demands it, and this copy can cope – treat it carefully it will last indefinetly if played on a modern lightweight deck. These grooves portray mininal wear and sound is mostly focused and sharp but not absolutely pristine throughout (being very critical again). Like Beatles albums, this and other Stones albums are so often seen totally trashed and unplayable, hearing this fine copy is like a breath of fresh air compared to many. Not totally ‘perfect’ but I feel exceptional and it’s a really challenging recording and I enjoyed it immensely. If the highly improbable sound perfection is mandatory, well this may fall slightly short for the audiophile sound purist or connoisseur collector, so if you have any doubts, do not bid. But I can be pretty sure, most listeners will love it.

End Piece: I hope I have not dragged this one out too much, but this is an important album - arguably one of the most difficult albums within the Rolling Stones catalgoue (if not ever). They don’t show up that often in fine playing conditions with supreme covers and intact neat inners. Being honest, the mono version is far, far harder to find in top conditions but it probably sold more at the time. Even the laughably undervalued price guides are now putting very large values on this and other early Stones albums, and prices are set to rise even higher and quicker in future guides as available, clean sounding copies run out. Even with very minor visual and audable blemishes, I would urge any Stones collectors who needs this elusive mono classic to think about this copy – apart from the perfectionists, few will be disappointed and I can strongly recommend it.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
