Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only very light and few, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: SLPD 519.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 143 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Rare and seldom will such a clean copy be seen or offered. This being a very rare 1st stereo pressing with the earliest ever matrixes, mothers and stampers, made within the first 300 ever issued.

Brief Info: Another ‘dark’ classic from the vaults of time: One of the most controversial films of its era, a movie based around satanism and a groundbreaking release. Proving a great ‘horror’ film does not have to contain loads of gore and blood, this is a creepy mind-movie and is still as unsettling today as it was back in the late 60s. Regarded as a masterpiece and starring Mia Farrow who becomes a victim of a coven of witches who want her to have the Devil’s child. Brilliantly directed by Roman Polanski and based on the novel by Ira Levin, Rosemary’s Baby is still one of the greatest cult horror films ever. Who could forget the eerie pram?, and brilliantly seen in sillouette on the soundtrack’s cover front. One of the earliest and darkest films to hit the cinema at this time, others similar include ‘The Devil Rides Out’ (1968) and eventually the infamous ‘Exorcist’. The soundtrack to this film is brilliant and equally unsettling, the first track ‘Lullaby’ is haunting and very creepy - it helps if you have seen the film and I do highly recommend it. I am not a massive soundtracks fan per se, but some are highly memorable and this certainly is one of them. If this film lodged in your memory back in 1968, this soundtrack will revive those dark visions. Compelling and atmospheric with a claustrophic intensity, this beautifully preserved record (and cover), does this full justice and this has become rare and sort-after by fans - this will also appeal to rock connoisseurs like myself who like things a little dark and eerie. What a joy to see this 41-year-old record looking and sounding like this. This is a genuine soundtrack and movie CLASSIC.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Moderately high.

Cover Grade and Format: The cover has one relatively minor flaw, the original owner put clear tape on the bottom flipback as it became unglued. This has little visibility but I fear it cannot be removed without damage to the unlaminated black bottom. This has little visibility and minimal visual impact. Whether this degrades or not is subjective opinion, it has no real damage as such except a tiny pull on the flipback corner (but look very hard to see it). So NOT taking this into account, this cover grades EX++. A single format with front laminate that wraps around the closed edges on to three rear flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and including the ‘Patents pending’ text.

Lamination & Front: The perfect cover artwork to depict this groundbreaking and controverial Satanic movie. This is superbly preserved and looks lovely. The laminate is very fresh, shiny and clear and is fully adhered with no lifting or blisters. Any dulling or friction rubs are tiny and faint and any creases are few and tiny too and practically nothing spoils this vintage cover. The right edge has the laminate ending a fraction short, but the exposed strip is clean with barely any wear and no grime-line formation. This really does defy its great age and will rarely be found looking much better.

Cover Back: The fine strip of clear tape apart, this back is near flaw too and the lack of wear to the unprotected black back panel is incredible. It has minimal traces of any fingermarks that will always adhere well to matt finished black covers and when applied, near impossible to remove. No rubbing, creasing, grubbiness or ringwear, remarkable for a cover this age. The flipbacks are equally neat and unworn, the tape as little visual effect and has actually help preserve the more vulnerable bottom one. All clean with no grime-line formations or burring. Both sides will prove hard to find better.

Top Edge: Minimal traces of any wear.

Bottom Edge: Unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with no wear or feathering but with a slightly ‘rustic’ trim in manufacture which is far from uncommon. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A near perfect spine: Solid, straight, uncompressed with mildly tapered ends in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: A tiny mild rub to top left but little else worthy of mention and all retain superb shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this collectable late 60’s soundtrack cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors, but if the fine tape on the back is an issue, please do not bid.

The Inner: This copy includes its original plain white unlined inner, it has the ‘Patent applied for’ text. This is around EX with a little mild semi-creasing and some mild, faint toning. All edges unsplit and neat.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) and a superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy barely even played on all the evidence and another typical record from this impressive collection. A copy time has over-looked, this elusive record will prove difficult to find better from a genuine first pressed example. Visually a super record that should please all collectors.

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful record plays up to its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, this has typical quiet passages and absolute silence is a near impossible ask, but this gives it a reall good go. No pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing, so-much-so, this gets downloaded to CD for my own future personal use. This is a superb soundtrack, just the dark and eerie types I really love. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this earliest pressing I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove near impossible to find better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
