Roy Ayers Ubiquity - Vibrations
TWO DIFFERENT TEST PRESSINGS FOR THE ORIGINAL 1976 US PRESSING!
The first features teal labels and comes from Columbia's Pitman, NJ plant. The inner sleeve it came in states that it was pressed on November 29, 1976.
The second features white labels and comes from an unknown plant, but is dated November 30, 1976 on the label.
Each test pressing features DIFFERENT MATRIXES - it is possible that one of the two features mastering different from that which appears on the well-known commercial issue. In fact, the labels of the white label pressing are marked A2 (Side 1) and B2 (Side 2), leading us to suspect that this was the "second cut". While the groove patterns of each do not really appear to be different from each other, such does not necessarily rule out our alternative mastering theory entirely.
The run-out inscriptions for each side of each test pressing are as follows:
Teal Label/Side 1: PD-1-6091-AS-CP X STERLING
Teal Label/Side 2: PD 1 6091 BS-CP STERLING
White Label/Side 1: PD-1-6091-AS-AD (2) STERLING
White Label/Side 2: 33 PD-1-6091-BS-AD-2 STERLING
A few notes on the inscriptions - "STERLING" is machine-stamped (not hand-etched) on each side; the "33" which appears in the White Label/Side 2 run-out is incredibly faint, and not apparent without looking closely; everything except for the STERLING stamps is hand-etched.
Also included is a very cool type-written 8.5"x11" sheet of paper labeled "Correction Sheet #1 - Corr. of credits Side 1 IMMEDIATE", which features a few hand-written notes (track names circled with numbers written next to them). Frankly, we do not see how these tracks have in any way been "corrected", as the tracklist is in every way identical to that of any regular pressing we have ever encountered. None-the-less, we find this to be a fascinating and revealing piece!
The discs come in a generic white jacket, which has been turned 90-degrees to the left (so that the disc slot is now facing upward), and which features the following hand-written inscription in pen -
"PD1-6091 A|B CP
2 TEST
ROY AYERS"
Regardless of whether or not this set contains any sort of exclusive, unreleased material, we believe that it provides a very telling glimpse into the inner workings of record production in the 1970s - the simultaneous golden decade of music and of audio science!
Label/Catalog: Polydor / PD-1-6091Test Pressing No. 1 (Teal Label) Grade: EX - Really very clean, but just not quite Near Mint (i.e. a light mark here and there).
Test Pressing No. 2 (White Label) Grade: VG - A couple of light scuffs are visible, although not glaringly obvious. There is also a short but feelable mark mostly located on Track A1 (but running a little into track A2), although it was only partially and intermittently audible. No skips or hangs. Also the labels are somewhat soiled, as you can see.
