Brief Info: For many fans of this great folk-rock artist, his best ever album, this title covers all aspects of what makes this man great – superb songs, expressive vocals and great guitar playing. Talking of guitars, the strange-named ‘guest’ guitarist on this work is no less than Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. The pseudonym had to be used for contractual reasons hence a well-kept secret for some time. Led Zeppelin were great fans of this man, even dedicating a song to him on their third album (‘Hats Off to (Roy) Harper’). This quite a difficult album to find, especially in better conditions – the record acoustic, the cover black, textured and unprotected, and seldom offered with an original insert sheet. This is a very fine all-round example with sound to match.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and given the uncompromising delicate nature of this one, arguably better still. An unlaminated gatefold with matt textured surfaces on the outside and smooth inside, this being made with soft card makes it extra vulnerable to just about anything time, bad storage and heavy handling can offer. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. This includes a plain white inner sleeve and rare lyric sheet which is guaranteed original.

Cover Front & Back: Difficult hardly covers this one: both sides have fared well with minimal traces of rubbing to the delicate textured surfaces. Only slight rim impression on the back near the top that is almost as light as it gets. The lack of deep penetrating ring wear is a major plus on a cover that seldom avoids it. Some fine creases, mostly near the edges with the odd gentle mark here-and-there. But with hardly any ink loss or erosion of the soft card, both front and back are impressive, the lack of sticker tears or issues another plus. As seen, this cover is attractive.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is smooth finished and has little to fault – the strange artwork impressive.

Top Edges: Both straight, neat and flush with hardly any hint of wear.

Bottom Edges: Similar for most with just some modest rubbing to the ends. For storage edges, these have also fared well.

Right Edge(s), and Type: These edges are crisp and neat with minimal hint of wear. Record stored on the back and all guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Also in very fine condition with hardly any wear to the surface or folds hinges. Solid, straight with barely any hint of compression. Some tilt to right from storage, so not rigidly upright as few will be, but the surface uncrushed. Folded square so the edges all meet up flush and parallel. All text is nigh-on perfect. Finding this perilous area better on this, or similar black soft covers will prove incredibly difficult.

Corners: Only small tip rubs with very fine to excellent shape retained with no bashes or dinks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very fragile 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. Most collectors will know how difficult this one is and this sets a very high standard. Indeed knowing this cover well enough, this one could indeed prove an upgrade for some. Not pristine, but it will take some beating and many, if not most collectors will enjoy it.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): little real wear at all, any ageing gentle and very mild indeed without the usual heavy discolouration most seen to acquire over the years. A basic plain white unlined inner with hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Lyric Insert Sheet: NEAR EXCELLENT: the text printed only on one side of this biscuit colour card, this is guaranteed original. Only a small few first issues included this lyric insert sheet, this came from such a copy where the record sadly did not make the grade. Hence this is scarce and not seen often. It is only gently aged with a little tone spotting and a few marks on the plain back. No tears or hard creases and the edges crisp. A couple of semi-creases show little, overall a great bonus to include with the slightly later copy.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and arguably better still. A lovely visual copy. Very clean with excellent shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy with two impressively clean playing surfaces, any surface marks are fine hairlines, wispy and faint as seen under bright light. Average room light reveals practically little, there are no penetrating stylus scratches. Visually a very fine record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic folk-rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – the odd gentle tick and trace on acoustic material near impossible to avoid totally, especially being playing on a very revealing system. Overall a clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this still quite early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, the odd tiny blemish on such material is almost the normal being honest. This will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
