Description

Rare historical 12-inch 78 rpm shellac record: DR. FREDERICK A COOK - HOW I REACHED THE POLE - Victor 31755, one-sided, with date of Aug 25 1908 on the labels. This is an amazing and rare monolog by an ARCTIC EXPLORER - Frederick Albert Cook was an American explorer, physician, and ethnographer, noted for his claim of having reached the North Pole on April 21, 1908. This was nearly a year before Robert Peary, who reached the North Pole on April 6, 1909. Both men's accounts were disputed for several years. His expedition did discover Meighen Island, the only discovery of an island in the North American Arctic by a United States expedition. In December 1909, after reviewing Cook's limited records, a commission of the University of Copenhagen ruled his claim unproven. In 1911, Cook published a memoir of his expedition, continuing his claim. His account of reaching Mount McKinley's summit has also been discredited. So this record features a lot of lying about his trip! So rare that most copies exist in library collections.

Condition is EX to NM (glossy and stunning with a few very soft sleeve scuffs and clean labels).

MORE TO COME - I've listed and will be listing many other rare 10" and 12" shellac records over the next month or two, mainly historical events, sports, personalities, politicians, speeches, military, WWI, WWII, presidential & campaign, kings & queens, etc.
A NOTE ON SHIPPING SHELLAC RECORDS: I use the floating method, with the record sandwiched between strong pieces of cardboard with corrugate in opposite directions, then placed inside a larger sturdy box with packing material all around inside to prevent any movement (either peanuts, large-bubble wrap, or crumpled paper). Sometimes if I have old 10" LP jackets I don't need, I will put your record in it before sandwiching; otherwise will be in a paper sleeve. I will also always insure these with the USPS. Due to the extra time, materials, insurance, and overall high level of stress associated with shipping these safely (YOU know!), I am asking $6.00 for Media Mail shipping ($4 is actual shipping cost). I think it is reasonable, and I get the feeling that most collectors who buy these online are happy to pay a little extra for the added assurance.
