This is one of over 600 rare doo-wop, R&B and blues 45s that I will be selling.
This MEDALLIONS EP is a masterpiece of early doo wop; rambunctious, sweet, innocent, wild, all at the same time. It is a 1958 reissue of a 1956 release, Dootone 202 (dates vary depending on which discography you trust). Unlike the earlier version, this one includes the picture sleeve. The record features their double-sided hit, Buick 59 / The Letter, which was first released in 1954 while they were still teenagers. Anyone who hasn't heard Buick 59 is in for a treat, with the whole group imitating roaring engines and screeching tires ("...Craaazy seats, man!"). Lead singer Vernon Greene's silky voice is loaded with hip nonchalance, sounding like he'd be the coolest cat in any crowd.
The up-tempo sides jump like crazy while the one slower number, The Letter, has tons of exaggerated teen-age drama, almost to the point of satire. During the spoken-word passage, Vernon speaks the immortal phrase, "...the pulpitudes of love...", later made famous by Steve Miller in a nod to this great group.
The front of the sleeve has a handsome b&w photo of the group. On the back is a short bio and another photo.
CONDITION: The Sleeve is solid, sturdy and flat, with a one-inch seam-split at the top. There is a little scuffing on the front and edges, and a touch of discoloration on the back (see photos). Otherwise, very clean. The Record itself is super-clean. Except for a few minuscule blemishes, the labels are pristine (photos). The vinyl has a few very light scratches, and some of the angel-hair variety that you can barely see. The record plays fine on my cheap player.
This is a true classic of West Coast doo wop, a hard record to find in such good condition. Thanks for dropping by. Good luck bidding!
