Description
For sale a rare dubplate in lacquer from Alton Ellis - Take Me on a 12" single sided disc from Utopia Studios. Alton Nehemiah Ellis, the king of Rocksteady was born in down town Kingston, Jamaica in September 1938.
Unlike ordinary vinyl records, which are quickly formed from lumps of plastic by a mass-production molding process, a so-called acetate/lacquer disc is created by using a recording lathe to cut an audio-signal-modulated groove into the surface of a special lacquer-coated blank disc, a real-time operation requiring expensive, delicate equipment and expert skill for good results. They are made for special purposes, almost never for sale to the general public. They can be played on any normal record player but will suffer from wear more quickly than vinyl. Some acetates are highly prized for their rarity, especially when they contain unpublished material.
They are often used as a market research tool to assess the probable sales of a tune once it is released, as they are far cheaper to produce than a pressed vinyl record.
The material of the disc is very soft as the groove is worn out little by little with every playback. After about fifty plays the loss in sound quality becomes noticeable.
The photos show the item you will be receiving and has not been tested as this could further damage the disc. It has been cleaned using an Okki Nokki record cleaner. Visually using my years of experience the disc looks in VG+ condition with no scratches or damage to the playing side. The sleeve has no rips but does have some wear and storage marks and I would say it was in VG condition.
