A magnificent original US Near Mint 'DJ' yellow Verve label pressing of this 1968 debut album from Rare Earth.
The band that was to become Rare Earth formed in the early 60s, at that time calling themselves The Sunliners. They spent most of the decade playing R&B in Detroit clubs, but in 1968 they managed to get themselves signed to Verve Records, changing their name at the same time.
Their first foray into the studio that same year resulted in this album 'Dreams and Answers' which is a mix of their R&B roots with psychedelia ... more or less a rock/ soul style with plenty of excellent vocals and instrumental work. Included here are covers of The Coasters' "Searchin'", The Temptations' "Get Ready", Wilson Pickett's "634-5789 (Soulsville, USA)" and a remake of perhaps one of their most interesting Sunliners' singles tracks, "The Land of Nod" though despite the heavy bass lines and in essence a very good blue-eyed soul album it failed to take off.
1969 saw them sign with Motown in 1969 and were one of the first acts signed to a new Motown imprint that would be dedicated to white rock acts. The record company did not have a name for the new label yet and the band jokingly suggested Motown call the label "Rare Earth" ... surprisingly this stuck. Success finally started coming their way with a number of Top 40 hits in the 1970–71 period, including covers of The Temptations' "(I Know) I'm Losing You" (which was used in the documentary video It's Time) and "Get Ready". Both were more successful than The Temptations' originals, with "Get Ready" being their biggest hit, peaking at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and selling over one million copies earning a gold record along the way.
To stumble across a magnificent original of this much underrated effort is a nice find indeed.
CONDITION – see 7 photos above :
Vinyl - play-tested completely both sides : Looks and plays like fantastic. Clean both sides and glorious shine. No spindle marks and appears un-played played. A simply gorgeous sound and clear as a bell. No pops. No skips. No marks. A thick 60's piece as you would expect. No lead in-out noise ... in fact no sound blemishes whatsoever. Rated NEAR MINT easily.
Labels : Clean.
Sleeve : Brilliant ! No writing, no ring-wear, no splits or creasing, the corners are square and the edges and spine are intact.
I'm not sure how you would best describe it but the only fault detectable is a little 'waving' at the top left corner on the front which extends a few inches inwards along the top just below the seam... a bit unusual really and looks like a factory imperfection more than anything else ... certainly nothing to be concerned about but drops the rating of the jacket to 9 out of 10 which is still way better than excellent.
