Here we have an astonishingly rare record.

It’s Polish baritone Siegmund Lieban (one of a family of singing Liebans.. they recorded as the Lieban Quartet etc) and he’s on a very hard-to-find single-sided 10” Lyrophon recorded in Berlin in about 1905.

He’s performing the Prologue from Pagliacci (by Leoncavallo) with piano accompaniment (and great gusto), on Lyrophon 354.

😺😺And...

It’s got an ANNOUNCED START!!😺😺

The Lyrophon discs resemble the thin BEKA records (pressed in the same plant?) and this one has the “dimpled” surface like some of the early G&T issues. We reckon it's been like this since it was new, and it's just one of those things.

It plays very well on our transcription deck. We’ve put a video up hereabouts, so you can actually hear this exact disc, directly from the “flat” output of our player. No noise reduction has been applied.

With the mono button pressed, you can hear the dimples galumphing through, but they are not bothersome, and were, we reckon, there from 1905.

The disc has the satin sheen of most discs of this era.

The label is clean and complete but a little worn around the hole in the middle.

You’ll never see another. We reckon that (even with those dimples) it’s a good solid VG/VG+ or better.

Curiously, this recording directly replaced a recording of the same title, by a different artiste, Juan Luria, in the Lyrophon catalogue. Luria’s version even had the same number as Lieban’s slightly later version. Chillingly, we learn from further research that Juan Luria, a Polish Jewish artiste, died in Auschwitz in 1943.

NO OVERSEAS bidders please.

And NO OVERSEAS bidders using UK addresses please.

SORRY, NO BUYER COLLECT...but.. if you buy MORE THAN ONE RECORD we will give you a HUGE discount on POSTAGE!
