SUPER RARE
Scott Joplin - Treemonisha - 1979 Chiltern Festival production. Private pressing on Rare Recorded Editions. Both records are in NM condition. Vinyl is shiny, glossy and without marks. Both records play NM. Sleeve is a European sleeve, so a little flimsy in G+ condition with two creases in the lower corners and cellophane tape on top and bottom seams. Includes one page synopsis of the opera (crediting the recording to John Pound). Cast information can be found on the back cover of the album sleeve.
This document captures a highly obscure piece of operatic history - a private recording of Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha released by the niche British label Rare Recorded Editions (catalog no. RRE 183-84).Because it was pressed by Rare Recorded Editions - a boutique label out of London specializing in extremely limited runs of neglected operas and historical broadcast transfers - this particular 2-LP set is considered an incredibly scarce collector’s item among cast album enthusiasts. It provides a rare window into how British regional theater interpreted early American ragtime opera during the late-1970s Joplin revival.
This is the Basil Ashmore piano-led Chiltern Festival production, NOT the common 1976 Houston Grand Opera orchestral recording on Deutsche-Grammophon.
