Excellent and mega-rare original lp of Shankar-led free improv, featuring the legendary Lasry-Baschet Structures Sonores, sound sculptures made of metal and glass. The Structures are heard in most if not all tracks, often up front as the main articulator of the melody, and sometimes in the background mixed with Indian percussion and exploited more for their noisy and percussive effects. Overall the blend of Shankar's group's intense jamming with the unusual clangs and crashes of the Structures is brilliant; this is probably the closest to a free jazz setting that the Baschet instruments have ever come. The players are Shankar, Alla Rakha, and Kamala Chakravarti; sitar and tabla can be heard along with plenty of heavy percussive sounds from the sculptures. These pieces were recorded for the soundtrack of 1967 British experimental film Viola directed by Richard Davis and Dunstan Pereira. Highly recommended.
