Ray Charles "A Life In Music" (Atlantic Deluxe AD5-3700)
This is a really, really rare 5-Lp set on the short-lived Atlantic Deluxe label. If you are looking for a complete portrait of Charles' influence on R&B and popular music, and the impact he had on early rock 'n roll, this is it! It's rare because, with 5 Lps, it carried a list price of around $100 - in 1983! Not many people bought these, and fewer are for sale. It's the only copy I've ever personally seen.
Five Lps, in a custom box set, with cover art by Milton Glaser, plus an 8-page booklet with an essay by Nat Hentoff. This really is the complete package. 48 songs in total.
I received this directly from WEA in 1983, when I was doing an oldies radio show. It's in wonderful condition, since I've been the only owner. It's a promotional copy, so it has a saw cut at the bottom left of the box; also, it arrived with some small seam damage to the top of the box due to UPS' rough handling in the WEA album mailer; I tried (25 years ago) to mend this with some Scotch tape.
Vinyl is NM, in like-new condition, as is the booklet. Comes in the irreplaceable custom Atlantic Deluxe poly inner sleeves. Box is VG+; no wear, but with the two small defects mentioned above.
I'm a former FM radio music director who's clearing out a bunch of doubles, extras and other errata I collected during 20 years on the air (not clearing it out fast enough for my wife, I'm afraid).
