Ray Russell - Master Format

(JW JW500 1983 Original LP)

?

Wow! A library album from Ray Russell! Didn’t know he’d made any. But then again library albums constantly surprise me and thinking about the amount of TV theme work Russell has done then maybe a library album isn’t such a big surprise.  As well as his TV themes you’ll know Russell from the excellent jazzy albums he made under his own name as well as his fine guitar playing on the Running Man and Mouse LPs.

This is mostly relaxed melodic synthy rock with some excellent guitar playing, a few more energetic tunes but predominately laid back instrumentals, some lovely acoustic guitar.  There’s a track at the end of side two called “Mid West” which I swear is a guitar instrumental version of “Dark End Of The Street”, can’t compete with James Carr’s version of course (what can?) but this is just lovely and probably worth the price of the album. Throughout the album everything is expertly played as you would expect on a library album, particularly one from such a great musician.  All in all a nice LP which I thought for a long time about before deciding not to keep and if I’m being honest I’m still in two minds about, so if no-one bids on it I wouldn’t be heartbroken!

For those who don’t know music library albums were produced for distribution to TV and radio production companies to provide ready made incidental music. They were made in small numbers and were never available to the public. Subsequently library albums are among the hardest records to track down with some titles selling for very large amounts of music on the rare occasions that they surface, I’m not after huge amounts of money for this one though!

The generic sleeve is in Excellent condition. The front cover is clean with no real damage or wear of any type, no writing, no tears, no ringwear or any other type of wear. The only flaw is a slight circular indentation where the record sits, otherwise very strong condition.

The rear sleeve is in similar nice condition with no damage or wear of any type other than a few odd dirty marks on the white background..

Both top and bottom seams are totally unworn, as is the spine which has all of the writing clearly readable.

The record itself is also in superb shape, I wouldn’t be surprised if this had never been played before I played it myself. It’s extremely clean and the vinyl has that lovely dark sheen that only barely played records have with no visible surface marks at all, not even when held under the sort of very harsh lamp which reveals everything. The sound is beautifully clean and clear, a very detailed sound which has a wide dynamic range and just sounds great, I wish all of my LPs sounded like this. No unwanted audio noise at all, no groovewear, no distortion, no jumping, no sticking, no pops, clicks or crackles - even between tracks is beautifully quiet, just a lovely audio performance and a lovely LP which even now I’m dithering about whether to keep or not.
