REALLY RED NEW STRINGS FOR OLD PUPPETS 5-song 7" ep
ex/ex cond (with its original $2.15 price sticker from Universal Records/berkeley) (i am the original owner, played it once and filed it away)

after hearing the Modern Needs/White Lies 45, i ordered a copy through the mail from the band, and got a handwritten note (from the singer) that they had "an earlier (first) single that they didn't issue commercially (because they weren't happy with it), but could/would sell me one if i wanted it." ohhh hell yeah -- and two weeks later i received --
Crowd Control which is my favorite recording of theirs. it blew my mind because IT SOUNDED LIKE FEAR (the LA band) SHOULD HAVE SOUNDED LIKE. and did sound like onstage (c.f. the Decline movie footage).
the later New Strings for Old Puppets 7"/ep is well played/well recorded, but has a "hardcore" influence (unlike the earlier material) and is less distinctive i always thought, so i'm booting it out of the house to find a new home. i don't like their album much either, but it only cost a couple bucks (back then) so it's permanently racked as an oddity.
NOTE: the band/Really Red played SF (with the Suicide Commandos whose live set sucked except for the one song, Complicated Fun) in 1981/north beach and were ONE OF THE BEST LIVE GROUPS I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. it was their "psychedelic cowboy" phase or something. and they did an indescribable sex pistols style punk-cover of "Downtown" (petula clark) that until over 1/2 way through, i thought must be some obscure never-heard followup to Pretty Vacant that had been shelved.
i saw the Stains/Dicks gig at the SF Mab that year, and they were not even vaguely in the same universe as Really Red (as a band/live band/or in any other respect). i got crazy cash-in/trade value for that ehhhh mediocre Stains 45 fifteen years later though!
