Description

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful LP – rare in the “Red Stereo” gatefold, stitched-seam jacket – from Deutsche Gramophone (SLPEM 136 004, German pressing, AH tulip label, stereo) features incomparable performances of Joseph Haydn’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra in D Major H. 7f No. D1* and Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra in C Major H. 7g No. C1, the former with flutist Kurt Redel, and the latter with oboist Kurt Kalmos. In both works, conductor Hans Stadlmair and the Munich Chamber Orchestra provide supremely eloquent and spirited accompaniment. These truly marvelous recordings – made at the Herkulessaal, Munich, on 20* and 22 November 1957 – boast DG’s very finest analog sound – warm, open, and yet richly detailed.

Note: The reverse side of the jacket states the release date of this LP as 9/58.

Wrote the critic D.S. in his review for the March 1959 issue of The Gramophone: “Haydn's Oboe Concerto (if indeed it is his) may be heard in a mono version by Evelyn Rothwell. This stereo performance by Kurt Kalmus is beautifully played and well recorded; the oboe tone is straight enough to sound "classical" yet flexible and charming in contrasting moods. The Flute Concerto on the reverse side is new to the catalogues, and though it may not be first-rate Haydn it is most enjoyable music, and Kurt Redel plays it with obvious zest and pleasure. I found the orchestral layout very convincing in stereo, and the soloist intelligently placed vis-a-vis his colleagues. Stadlmair accompanies expertly, and maintains good tempi throughout. For Haydn lovers, this disc is a very desirable addition to the library.”

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the double-gatefold jacket is VERY GOOD+. There is slight bumping/wear at corners, minor edgewear, and a small bit of writing to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a very good collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP is near-MINT and the playback is outstanding – overall, a truly fine collector’s copy, virtually MINT.
