Description
Richard Pryor. Supernigger. Laff Records(LAFF A224). 1982. Stereo. This is a recording of some 1968 performances of Pryor, and his first album.
This includes some embryonic attempts at his one-man theater approach and truth-to-power with humor. "Supern----r" is an interesting glimpse of what was to come. The idea of "Superman with Soul" (Clark Washington as opposed to Clark Kent, the man of steel smoking weed in the closet, etc.). is promising. "TV Panel" is another good idea that goes a bit off, as our man plays all of the participants of a televised discussion of pontificating pseudo-intellectuals.
However, the price of admission here is PRISON PLAY (later known as Black Ben the Blacksmith). An early tour-de-farce of Pryor imagining a play given for prisoners involving a Mandingo-type affair between a slave and his white mistress. This REALLY works and sets the stage for what was to come!
