So there used to be an Australian band called Birthday Party, in the early 80's, that was phenomenal, but not well known because the music was chaotic and dissonant and trashy and loud, but some of us loved them for all that, and especially for the mad surreal poetry of the lead singer, Nick Cave.
Then Nick Cave left the band and started his solo career, and that was quite different--suddenly he was a deeply earnest songwriter, dedicated to atmosphere and quiet murder.
I'm making an analogy here with Robyn Hitchcock, who a few years earlier also had a brilliant band (The Soft Boys--try streaming their song "Wading through a ventilator") that was even more obscure, and broke up after one great album...and then Robyn Hitchcock's first album appeared (pre-dating Nick Cave by three years), and he was every bit as talented as he'd been with his band, but the sound was now much more emotionally accessible, and there's a Dylan feeling to his voice at times.
Here, anyway, is that album, in its first pressing, on a small UK label. He even looks exactly like Nick Cave on the front cover. This has the original custom inner sleeve, and the first-pressing labels in grey and dark red, and the run-out groove etched with the words "Happy Landing."
Light inoffensive surface noise, I'm calling it VG+. and the sleeve is only VG as you can see in the photos. Geez what a good era of music this was, better than we appreciated at the time.
