This superb LP – a beautiful collector's copy with a near perfect jacket – from Capitol (G 7176, US pressing, rainbow label, mono) entitled "Music of Spanish Masters" features conductor Artur Rodzinski and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in brilliant, sumptuous performances of music by Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albeniz, and Enrique Granados.

In reviewing an EMI "Artist Profile" CD re-issue of these performances, the critic for The Gramophone wrote in the September 1996 issue:

"Artur Rodzinski’s RPO legacy (or at least the small part of it for which EMI were responsible) has a striking personality. Best by far are the Spanish items, the “Ritual fire dance” being one of the most dramatically incisive accounts ever recorded. Beecham’s orchestra is on top form for sultry Granados, sun-drenched Albeniz and a particularly memorable Three-cornered hat. If you require evidence as to just how seductive this so-called martinet could be on occasion, then try 0'22'' into the ballet’s “Introduction”, and note the ensuing woodwind solos (I can remember an equally alluring Rapsodie espagnole that Rodzinski recorded in Cleveland years before). "

All five works were recorded in demonstration quality sound at EMI Studio No. 1, Abbey Road, London. The remarkable cover art reproduces a detail from John Singer Sargent's "Flamenco, Flamenco".

There are insightful liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Leonard Duck, provided in English only. The memorable cover photo of Leinsdorf is similarly uncredited, alas.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is light shelfwear to the rear panel, but really that is all – a very fine collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
