Up for sale is an LP that is getting harder and harder to come by in this condition! In 1966, the Rolling Stones released their first true album in "Aftermath", a recording where the majority of the songs were written by the band itself. This particular LP was cut very early as evidenced by the matrix information. While I cannot for certain call this a "First Pressing" (simply because it is very hard to do so in regards to these Decca records and I am no expert), this has all the things you want in an early Stones pressing. "Unboxed" Decca Grooved Labels w/ KT Tax Code and inverted matrix above the catalog number. This is known as Design No 8 / Version 1.
Matrix Info:
Side 1 Matrix: XZAL-7209-1W 62B SLF A Side 2 Matrix: XZAL-7210-1W 1K
This tells us that it was cut using the FIRST Master Lacquer on both sides. Side one was cut using the 2nd Mother (First Stamper) and side two was cut using the 1st Mother (4th Stamper). Interestingly the side one matrix also has the arbitrary second number and letter added to the Mother number as well as an unknown identifier in SLF A.
Record Condition: VG+ (Overall)
Side One Visual Grade: VG+. A VERY solid visual grade with only a few paper scuffs that I found to be imperceptible. Nice gloss and shine remain. Label shows few spindle marks with deep, solid blue colors!
Side One Play Grade: B. Here is the only real flaw of this pressing. The early parts of side one do have a few audible tics in the quieter passages. These become fewer and fewer as the side nears it's conclusion. Little to no running background noise.
Side Two Visual Grade: VG+. Another solid visual grade w/ few inaudible paper scuffs. Great gloss and shine with a deep solid blue label.
Side Two Play Grade A. Very few tics in quieter sections and no running background noise. A truly great listen!
Overall, the music shines through and makes for a fantastic listening experience for this classic record!
Cover Grade: VG+
As if this record wasn't already good enough, it comes with the increasingly harder to find "Spill Over" cover. As the story goes, the earliest pressings had a purple/reddish drop shadow but was soon withdrawn from the marketplace. After those copies were pulled, a 2nd cover was issued without it. However, a few of those copies had a tinge of the shadow remaining as evidenced in the pictures included. The front cover has a few creases but retains it's laminate shine. The back cover is a very nice white with a few pencil markings next to some of the track names and a crease on the bottom right.
***Note*** This record has been ultrasonically cleaned so any tics remaining would be hard to eliminate. As we all know, however, a good cleaning can do wonders for LP's! Also, if you have a cart with a lower S/N ratio, it could really make this record a truly marvelous listening experience! Play testing was done on a Rega RP1 Performance Pack combo. Also, the colors on my pictures are a bit washed out as my lighting setup isn't optimal. These colors really do pop in person!
