Description

This is a rare beast indeed – an original 1968 stereo double-sided UK test pressing of the Rolling Stones’ legendary “Beggar’s Banquet” LP (Decca SKL 4955). This pressing, of which only a handful can exist, would have been used by the post-production cutting facility to send as a ‘factory sample’ to the artist, producer and record company in order to check that the volume, EQ, sequence etc were all OK in their opinion, before the manufacture of the actual record. Indeed the label bears the words: “This pressing is not necessarily representative of the finished record and must not be used for review purposes”. So although the tracks are all in the same order, it may well be slightly different from the commercial release – if so, would any Stones experts out there care to let me know? Of course, that would make it even more highly collectable…

Please note that a test pressing should not be confused with a ‘white label’: the latter was usually produced in quantities of a few hundred as a pre-release promotional tool, whereas a test pressing was only made in tiny quantities – usually less than 10 – for the artists themselves to evaluate.

Anyway the record is in fine, VG+ condition, having had only one owner and been rarely played – no visible scratches or wear. The only annoying thing is that some klutz (namely me) has seen fit to cover the original spindly writing by the Decca engineer on both labels with his own bold felt-tip (see pics). Ah well, give me a break, it was 42 years ago!

For obvious reasons, there is no picture sleeve, as the famously controversial artwork hadn’t yet been completed. The LP is in a plain white card sleeve.

The item will be safely packaged in a virgin custom LP mailer with stiffener, and sent by Royal Mail within the UK, by airmail overseas. PayPal payments only please.

For additional security, I can offer the following options at cost: Recorded Delivery within the UK for GBP 0.75, ISF (International Signed For) service overseas for GBP 4.25.

If you have any queries, please contact me for a swift reply. More pics available on request.

NB In case this posting looks familiar: I previously listed this item a few months ago, but as it turned out the winning bidder was a non-payer and the transaction was cancelled. Rather than re-listing immediately during the summer holiday season, I thought it better to wait until later in the year.
