Rory Gallagher was an Irish blues-rock multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and bandleader. Gallagher recorded solo albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, after forming the band Taste during the late 1960s. A talented guitarist known for his charismatic performances and dedication to his craft. After the break-up of Taste, Gallagher toured under his own name, hiring former Deep Joy bass player Gerry McAvoy to play on Gallagher's self-titled debut album, Rory Gallagher.The 1970s were Gallagher's most prolific period. He produced ten albums in that decade, including two live albums, Live in Europe and Irish Tour '74. November 1971 saw the release of his album, Deuce. In the same year he was voted Melody Maker's International Top Musician of the Year, ahead of Eric Clapton.
In 1971 'Taste' were on the brink of international success. They had built up a loyal fan base (which included John Lennon), played the legendary Isle of Wight Festival and recorded two blistering albums, but to the surprise of both their fans and their contemporaries the band split due to managerial and musical differences.Rory keen to utilize this new found musical freedom, returned to London's Advision studio's with engineer Eddy Offord whom Rory had worked with during the recording of the Taste album On the Boards. The resultant sessions became Rory's first solo album, the eponymously titled Rory Gallagher. This album opens with a trademark Gallagher riff leading into 'Laundromat', a track written at the time of the 'Taste' split when the group was residing in a bedsit in Earls Court which had a public laundromat in the basement. In typical Rory style he used this uninspiring subject matter to create a highly inspirational song.
