Baron Elmo proudly presents a magnificent jazz outing by one of the music's true originals, reedsman extraordinaire ROSCOE MITCHELL: Nonaah, a double lp released in 1977 by the Nessa label. Both solo and during his lengthy tenure with the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Roscoe has pushed the envelope as far as any jazz artist… always seeking, always questioning, always placing his considerable skills in a mindblowing variety of musical contexts. These two records capture six months of Roscoe's sound experiments, starting in late 1976, featuring our man performing solo and in various duo, trio and quartet lineups. Interestingly enough, Roscoe confines himself to alto saxophone throughout, rather than the battery of reeds he usually employs. The lp kicks off with the stunning title track, a 22-minute solo tour de force where Roscoe plays a brief squawking phrase, then spends many minutes breaking it down… grappling with it, worrying it, squeezing it, stretching it like taffy until he achieves transcendence. It's an astonishing performance, of which none other than Lester Bangs enthused, "This record has given me new hope for jazz." Also featured are a duet with Anthony Braxton on sopranino sax; a trio with George Lewis (trombone) and Muhal Richard Abrams (piano); a duet with fellow Art Ensemble bassist Malachi Favors; and a saxophone quartet version of "Nonaah," performed by Roscoe, Joseph Jarman, Wallace McMillan and Henry Threadgill, all playing alto. This is one jazz album that explodes with ideas, all backed by superb playing from all involved. Superb liner notes (by Terry Martin, with significant input from Roscoe himself) complete the package. Both records and the gatefold jacket are in beautiful shape… we'd rate both as a strong VG++, just a notch below near-mint. (This copy was purchased new by Baron Elmo and treated with tender loving care.)
