Decca - MET285/6/7 (Purple Labels, Silver Lettering) - 1965 issue
Excerpts: Overture. Act 1—Largo at factotum; All' idea di quel metallo; Una voce poco fa; La calunnia; Dunque in son; Ma signor . . . Zitto tu! Act 2— Contro en cor che accende; Orsn, signor don Bartolo; Aft! qual colpo inaspettato; Insornma, io ho tutti i ford.
No opera takes more kindly to the highlights treatment than The Barber of Seville and though I would not wish to discourage anyone from buying the complete set I am bound to say that this generous helping of excerpts—on one double-sided, joyous disc —do give you the essence of Rossini's wonderfully high spirited score. The sound is excellent. There is a leaflet of the text. Signor Varviso sets very acceptable tempos and the singing is mostly admirable, with a beautiful "Contro un car" from Miss Berganza in the singing-lesson scene. In the Letter Duet I find the Spanish Figaro rather heavy-handed in florid passages, but in excerpts such as these he is not on top of us for very long at a time. It's a fine voice, to be sure, but he doesn't 'act' with it. Mr Corena is a highly experienced Bartolo, with Mr Ghiaurov a splendid monster of a Don Basilio. Both mono and stereo come up splendidly. The wonderful treadlesewing-machine finale of the first act is guaranteed to lift the saddest heart.
