Roy Haynes Quartet "Out Of The Afternoon" 1962
RARE Impulse! Recording, Mono A-23
One of Haynes' landmark recordings as bandleader on the Impulse! label. His quartet includes Haynes, drums; Roland Kirk, tenor sax and assorted wind instruments; HenryGrimes, bass; and Tommy Flanagan, piano. Recorded in May, 1962, "Out Of The Afternoon" exhibits the incipient movement towards free jazz propagated by Impulse! in the 1960s.
Consider this record a delightful diversion on "the house that Trane built", just without the Trane -- although Trane might have built this Quartet, as Flanagan had recently appeared, and built a
reputation, on Coltrane's "Giant Steps." Near mint condition, only a few negligible scuffs on the vinyl. There is some evident ring-wear on the Side 1 label, and some ink markings and stamping on the inside of
the cover. But overall, an excellent copy of a wonderfully unique record!
