Reviews
Genre: Country
I don't know a great deal about the Tribute label (does anyone ?). It was based in New York City and only seems to have released
about a dozen albums including a couple with ties to former Tea Company front man Frankie Carr
None are easy to locate and as far as I know, none have ever been reissued.
The 'tax scam' genre seems to have had a brief heyday - roughly 1976 to 1978, though there are some labels that released material up through the early 1980s. I'm guessing that there must have been some changes to Federal tax laws that made it difficult, or illegal to maintain the scheme beyond that timeframe. There also seem to have been business and 'artistic' connections between many of the tax scam labels. The best known are those associated with the Prelude label (Dellwood, Guinness, and Tomorrow), Morris Levy's infamous Tiger Lily label, and Huey Meaux's Crazy Cajun label. Also frequently associated with the tax scam world are Bob Gallo (aka Robert John Gallo) and his Mandala label, Mike Pinera's Illusion label, and the mysterious Johnny Kitchen who is associated with the Album Globe, Album World, and Koala labels. Other, smaller outfits included Baby Grand, Dobre, Rocking Horse, Tribute, and Lloyd Price's TSG label. I'm sure there are more.

RECORD GRADING SYSTEM
Still Sealed (SS): Never opened, item is new. Because factory errors have been known to occur, a record that is still factory sealed, does not in itself guarantee Mint condition, but in all probability, it is.
Mint (M): As new as it gets and still having been opened. May have been played once or twice, but remains flawless in all aspects.
Vinyl…
+ high gloss finish
+ no warping
+ no physical marks or visible blemishes
+ plays without any surface noise
Label…
+ shows no evidence of use…
- including no spindle marks, color fading, paper tears, tape, stickers, handwriting or other markings
- can be a promotional issue, but will not have the label drilled with a secondary, off center hole
External LP & 45/78 rpm Covers…
+ may have almost invisible ring indentations or other signs of gentle handling
+ will not show any shelf wear, scuffing, bending, handwriting, stains, taped repairs or frayed edges
+ promotional factory or store stickers (including price tags) are acceptable, but no personal stickers (such as name or inventory label)
+ complete or partial removal of the shrink over-wrap does not disqualify record from this grade (but can add to value if intact)
+ punch holes, saw-cuts, or clipped corners, disqualifies record from this grade
Inside LP Sleeves (Jackets)…
+ original - without split seams, tape, stickers, stains, handwriting, tears, frayed edges, creases or age discoloration
+ promotional items that may have been included from the factory are included and should be damage free
Excellent (EX): Shows some signs the recording was played, but obviously handled gently.
Vinyl…
+ still shiny, may show some signs of play such as light scuffing/scratches
+ no warping
+ may have very light physical marks or blemishes
+ plays with extreme minor, occasional surface noises
Label…
+ shows very light evidence of use…
- including very light spindle marks or minor edge scuffing, but no color fading, handwriting, paper tears, tape or stickers
- can be a promotional issue, and may have the label drilled with a secondary, off center hole
External LP & 45/78 rpm Covers…
+ may have very light ring indentations or scuffing
+ may show very light shelf wear, but no bending, handwriting, stains, taped repairs or frayed edges
- however, taped-over spines (done for protection) may exist and is acceptable
+ promotional factory or store stickers (including price tags) or personal sticker is acceptable (such as name or inventory label)
+ complete or partial removal of the shrink over-wrap is a matter of personal preference
+ punch holes, saw-cuts, or clipped corners, disqualifies cover from this grade
Inside LP Sleeves (Jackets)…
+ may be replacement, but without split seams, tape, stickers, stains, handwriting, tears, frayed edges, creases or age discoloration
+ promotional items that may have been included from the factory are optional, but if included, may have some minor damage or damage repair
Very Good Plus (VG+): This is is the grade in which the majority of used recordings classify.
Vinyl…
+ shine starting to fade, may show some signs of play/use such as surface scuffing/scratches
+ no warping
+ may have physical marks or blemishes
+ plays with spotty surface noises, especially noticeable on the outer-rim tracks
Label…
+ shows average evidence of use…
- including light to moderate spindle marks or edge scuffing
- can be a promotional issue, and may have the label drilled with a secondary, off center hole
- can show some color fading, light handwriting, tiny paper tears, tape repairs, stickers or light stains
External LP & 45/78 rpm Covers…
+ may have moderate ring indentations or scuffing
+ may show moderate shelf wear including bending, color fading, light handwriting, small stains, taped-over repairs or frayed edges
+ promotional factory or store stickers (including price tags) or personal sticker are acceptable (such as name or inventory label)
+ complete or partial removal of the shrink over-wrap is a matter of personal preference
+ punch holes, saw-cuts, or clipped corners, is acceptable at this grade
Inside LP Sleeves (Jackets)…
+ may be replacement and have split seams, taped-over repairs, stickers, stains, handwriting, tears, frayed edges, creases or age discoloration
+ promotional items that may have been included from the factory are optional, but if included, may have some minor damage or damage repair
Very Good (VG): Defects found in a VG+ record will be more pronounced. If one cares more about music than details, this will make you happy.
Vinyl…
+ shine loss and groove wear is noticeable with light scratches that will affect sound, especially during the track’s intro, fade and softer passages
+ slight warping may exist that does not affect play or sound
+ may have multiple physical marks or blemishes – but does not skip or repeat

External LP & 45/78 rpm Covers…
+ may have prominent ring indentations or scuffing
+ may show heavy shelf wear including bending, color fading, handwriting, larger stains, taped-over repairs or frayed edges (but still useable)
+ promotional factory or store stickers (including price tags) or personal stickers are acceptable (such as name or inventory label)
+ complete or partial removal of the shrink over-wrap is a matter of personal preference
+ punch holes, saw-cuts, or clipped corners, is acceptable at this grade
Inside LP Sleeves (Jackets)…
+ may be replacement (if existing at all) and have multiple defects such as handwriting, taped-over seam repairs, frayed openings, stains, fading
+ promotional items that may have been included from the factory are optional, but if included, may have major damage or damage repair
Good (G), Good Plus (G+): A record in this condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping and will make an acceptable filler to increase the size of a collection. Recordings have a significant loss of shine, surface noise, scratches and visible groove wear (on a styrene record, the groove may be starting to turn white). It will do until something better comes along.
Fair (F) and Poor (P): Unless you are looking to decorate a room by hanging these from the ceiling, or the label, cover/jacket/sleeve is so rare that the thought of having it boggles your mind, these are usually yard sale items at best. Most of the time, these records have lost all luster, skip or repeat, are badly warped or are cracked. Labels are no longer readable and the covers are generally falling apart beyond reasonable repair.
