Aaaah…call this a labor of love, if you will: marketing the music and the vibrant, joyful voice of my all-time favorite singer - and spreading the Sam Cooke gospel in the process !!! That's heaven to me, indeed. Sam Cooke was the greatest American singer of all times, hands down; no ifs, ands or buts. Respectfully, the fans of Enrico Caruso, Frankie Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat "King" Cole or Billy Ecstine can take their case elsewhere - my judgment is final (and also shared by such an authority as Jerry Wexler, legendary Atlantic A&R man, who - to paraphrase his words - proclaimed that Sam Cooke was a "perfect" singer, who "had it all"). In an unlikely event that you are totally unfamiliar with Sam’s music, this is the disc from which you should start building your Sam Cooke collection. This PROMO-ONLY 1986 12"-RECORD lovingly samples no less than 31 (count ‘em) of his biggest hits - each and every one of them, actually; practically every single Sam Cooke song that ever charted, starting with his gospel hits such "That’s Heaven to me" and following his Specialty, Keen and RCA career down to his untimely death in 1964. 28 songs are represented by segments of the original songs, while three songs (Wonderful World, Just for you, and Change is Gonna Come) are presented here in their entirety. The record ends with an full-length version (with an additional verse, never previously issued) of one of the most beautiful ballads ever written and sung by man, "A CHANGE IS GONNA COME". If, by the time this song ends you do not feel misty and teary-eyed, check your pulse and call 911 IMMEDIATELY. This legendary song, which inspired no less than 37 other versions (including the versions by Otis Redding, Gram Parker, Loraine Elison, Jerry Buttler and practically every self-respecting black artist that ever lived) became one of the most-performed songs of all times. It is a classic gospel/R&B ballad which also served as an unofficial civil rights movement anthem.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record. In this case, though, this is a rather moot point,  since this rare promo-only version of the album was never commercially released to begin with.

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(c)         Stock (commercially released) pressings of this album do not exist

-       Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

-       Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
