COVER STOCK WITH RUB AND RING WEAR BOTH SIDES. TOP EDGE SPLIT ABOUT 3/4 LENGTH. CORNERS WITH ROUGH SPOTS AS WELL AS THE EDGES. TOP RIGHT CORNER WITH SMALL BEND MARK. AN INKED NAME AT TOP EDGE BACK. SOME LIGHT OVERALL AGE DISCOLORATION TO THE WHITE CARD STOCK.

VIRGINS SPINDLE HOLE. APPEARS PRISTINE OUT OF THE SLEEVE; UNDER BRIGHT ANGLED LIGHT A VERY FEW LIGHT SURFACE RUB MARKS. THE LAST TRACKS OF BOTH SIDES SHOW A SMALL PIN HEAD SIZED DIMPLE IN THE VINYL BLANK. I'VE TEST PLAYED THIS AREA ON THE VPI TURNTABLE WITH NO NOTICE OF THE PRESSING DEFECT. IF NOT FOR THE PIN DOT DIMPLES IT WOULD HAVE EARNED A MINUT MINUS IN MY BOOK. EVEN THOUGH THE COVER IS NOT IN PERFECT CONDITION, IT APPEARS THAT THIS VINYL BLANK WAS PLAYED FEW TIMES, IF AT ALL. PERFECTLY MINT AND NEAR MINT COPIES NOW FETCH $200 PLUS.

On Contours, his second Blue Note album, tenor saxophonist Sam Rivers fully embraced the avant-garde, but presented his music in a way that wouldn't be upsetting or confusing to hard bop loyalists. Rivers leads a quintet featuring trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Joe Chambers through a set of originals that walk a fine line between probing, contemplative post-bop and densely dissonant avant-jazz. Each musician is able to play the extremes equally well while remaining sensitive to the compositional subtleties. Rarely is Contours anything less than enthralling, and it remains one of the high watermarks of the mid-'60s avant-garde movement.
