Description

Wow, what you are bidding on is a beautiful, very old, Italian pressing of SAM RIVERS: VILLALAGO.  The lp is in VG+ condition, the cover is nice! (the records looks unplayed).  If you need this lp, this is the one to get. Long out of print.  This is a real hard one to find in this condition.   EXCELLENT FREE JAZZ.

Rivers arrived in New York from Boston in the late 1960s as an elder protege of Anthony Williams, briefly appearing with Miles Davis and making several recordings for Blue Note.

What first cemented his reputation in the free world was his European tour with the Cecil Taylor unit (with Jimmy Lyons and Andrew Cyrille).  This taking him out of the relatively structured "Blue Note New Thing" movement and into more free-form stylings.

Live performances during the early 1970s were based on his trio, which took several forms (and many players passing through), from a quite disciplined Dave Holland and Barry Altschul to a much more wild and woolly Joe Daley and Sydney Smart.

As if performance wasn't enough, Rivers also opened one of the first (and possibly most well-known) loft spaces in New York - Studio Rivbea being the site of many laegendary performances (summarised in the Wildflowers recordings).

It's the way of these things that styles coalesce, creative juices dry up - after Rivbea closed and Rivers started the peripatetic touring lifestyle once more - sometimes the sounds seemed to be there while the passion was on vacation.

Rivers relocated to Florida and made something of a self-revival.  Formed a trio and a big band based around local musicians, writing regularly.  To some extent there's a valid criticism that the groups "present" his music rather than "create" - but the quality is there (and certainly the Florida big band do just as good a job of presenting the music as the all-star big band assembled for recordings).
