Originally released in 1994 and recently celebrating its 30th anniversary, Ceremony Of Opposites would serve as the third full-length from Swiss black metal avant-garde extremists Samael, with many considering the project to be the quintessential transitional work from the raw intensity of 1991's Worship Him and 1992's Blood Ritual, to the eventual martial-industrial synth-laden cosmic direction they would take from 1996's Passage onwards. Still featuring their earlier Satanic lyrics touching on the definitions of true blasphemy as well as the teachings of Aleister Crowley, before they would replace their concepts with occult and Lovecraftian musings; the material illustrates not so much a marrying of dichotomous extreme genres, but a sonic mutation happening in real time with blackened riffage and blast beats giving way to gothic, industrialist percussion and darkwave atmospherics. Three decades on has only emboldened the album as a truly ahead of its time, pioneering masterwork within the realms of underground metallic extremity.
