Sameti : Sameti A / B 1st Press (Germany) 1972 (Brain Label)
This rare and collectable first pressing from Germany plays with superb audio across all of S1 and the vast majority of S2. The clarity, depth and power on S1 is faultless and S2 only has a minimal amount of crackle / static right at the start and the beginning of the final quiet section towards the end. This record has only been lightly played judging by the audio, the minimal spindle wear and the very clean visual look of the vinyl.
Sameti were fronted by Christian 'Shrat' Thiele the former Amon Düül II vocalist / percussionist.
The gatefold is in great condition with only very minimal wear and has the import clip in both the front and back cover. The original inner sleeve is very clean with just one side split.
Brain 1020 // st-1020-A 0664.199s1 / st-1020-B 0664.199s2 // PF A7 (etched on both)
The audio on S1 is Mint(-)
The audio on S2 is Near Mint (intro for a few seconds and first part of the quiet end section are VG)
The gatefold is Ex+
The labels are Near Mint
The inner sleeve is VG+
The vinyl is in lovely condition and still has a superb glossy sheen with no scratches. S1 is visually stunning with only a couple of small faint blemishes and a couple of hairlines. S2 is almost as good with only two hairlines that are a little more obvious and some very minor 'spotting'. This can only be seen under a bright light and the green Brain labels are super clean with barely any spindle wear.
Play grading
The run in on S1 is so clean and then 'Get Up' plays with stunning quality from the very first note. It continues in the same way with no intrusion on the audio - every vocal and instrumental section play with a clarity and power that is so strong and this is without doubt a Mint start to the album.
'The Useless Appendix' plays to the same standard with no interference, not one tick even and obviously no clicks or pop. No background static either, just pristine audio from start to finish. Another Mint track.
The opening vocal on 'Big Fat Brother Joint' is flawless and as it progresses there is no let up in quality. Thiele's voice may be an acquired taste but every verse does indeed play to perfection without any background. The extended sax solo is so clean and fresh and 'as new' is a correct description, the sonic quality is superb! Perhaps more jazz rock than prog rock this entire instrumental section plays with sublime clarity and warmth and there are no negatives. A stunning Mint version which is impressive when you consider it runs at nearly 9 minutes!
The quiet intro on 'To My Confidential Lady' plays so clearly with only a couple of mega quiet ticks and the opening vocal has no interference either. It continues in much the same way with no actual interference. There is just a minor touch of distortion on the vocal but is that due to how it was recorded / produced or because it is the final track on the side? Regardless of the reason it is only very minor and has no impact on the overall 'listen', it hardly warrants a mention as it really is so so minimal! There are no ticks, clicks or pops and right through to the fade out it plays with impeccable quality. Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The quiet intro on the 'Anotherwaytosee Improvisation' has a little intermittent crackle at the start on S2 but this does not last long and the rest of this section plays with exceptional clarity. As the volume increases the audio is crystal clear and the depth of the audio is stunning. From then onwards it plays to a very high standard and the vast majority does indeed play as Mint, the clarity and definition of the audio is flawless. I noticed 3/4 minor static ticks after 9 minutes and a couple more around 11 minutes but the overall playback is superb. The quiet end section has some light static and a little crackle at the start and then plays very clearly with hardly any intrusion. I would say Near Mint is about right for the majority of this 22 minute opus but the intro (for a short time only) and the first part of the end sequence grade as VG but it doesn't impact too much on the overall sound. Like I say the vast majority of this 'improv' plays with stunning quality.
In summary this rare album plays with superb audio and S1 in particular cannot be faulted in any way. The sonic quality is 'high end' to say the least and S2 is not far off this level. As stated only the intro and the end section have a little interference but all the music in between - fantastic! With a very impressive cover also this will no doubt appeal to any Krautrock collector.
The Gatefold & Inner Sleeve
The cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear. The edges and spine are superb with no marking and the corners are also extremely clean with no obvious wear. The opening edge is immaculate. The front cover is super clean and has just some light marking around the edges here and there - sort of looks like laminate lift but you can only see it when you hold the cover at a certain angle towards the light. The back cover has only a very minimal amount of this on a couple of edges and remains in superb order. The inside of the gatefold is very clean with only a little 'laminate lift' along the top edge. There is also an import clip in the top right of the front cover and top left of the back cover. A fine example overall though with only superficial wear.
The original plain white glossy inner is totally unmarked and has just one side split. There are a sequence of numbers in one corner ending 72 which must refer to the release date.
