Of the many collaborations between Sanders and producer Bill Laswell, this effort is highly regarded as the most cohesive and emotionally resonant. Deeply rooted in African traditions, the album fuses Sanders' transcendent tenor and soprano saxophone work with layered global rhythms, chanted vocals and textured electronic production. Originally released back in 1996, it opens with the infectious 'Our Roots (Began in Africa)', the record's most accessible moment, a booming groove under hip-hop chants, rich with ancestral pride. The album's first side continues with the Laswell-polished 'Nozipho' and 'Tomoki', where African drumming, spiritual vocals and Sanders' lyrical phrasing create an earthy, danceable sound. Bernie Worrell's keys (often understated but always tasteful), Foday Musa Suso's kora and Dominic Kanza's guitar add elegance to the primal grooves. Yet it's 'Ocean Song on Side-B that forms the emotional moment, a mournful meditation evoking centuries of exploitation and loss, dissolving into the hopeful 'Kumba' and the celebratory 'Country Mile'. A highly desirable reissue.
