Extremely rare, limited edition 2nd pressing from the early 60s of this classic cast recording.
SANDHOG - A FOLK OPERA
Only Clownaround and Body In the Seine are as rare, and unlike the 1955 Sandhog first pressing (difficult to find in better than VG condition), this early 60s 2nd pressing is near-perfect.
SANDHOG was the brainchild of Waldo Salt (the blacklisted screenwriter who would later write the screenplays for MIDNIGHT COWBOY, SERPICO, COMING HOME, THE DAY OF THE LOCUST and others) and Earl Robinson (also blacklisted; the composer of BALLAD FOR AMERICANS, THE HOUSE I LIVE IN and other classic songs).
The opera-like musical is about a sandhog (a tunnel digger in New York City) named Johnny O'Sullivan in the late 19th Century, and like most of Salt's work, celebrates the so-called "common" working man.
This is essentially a demo version of the show, with Robinson and Salt performing the songs themselves on the recording.
SANDHOG is rarely offered for sale (and then in the $100 - $400 range), and this is the VERY limited (1961 or 1962) 2nd pressing by the still blacklisted composers in an attempt to revive the show. (Originally performed in New York at the Phoenix Theatre in 1954.) In the midst of the early 60s folk revival and rising social consciousness, the timing seemed good, but the show was not to be revived.
As rare as the 1955 pressing is, this pressing is scarcer still, and of much higher sound quality than the 1955 version.
Vinyl is NM- or better, and simply immaculate in original Vanguard sleeve. 
The jacket was printed without a cover slick, and has a small, promo-style drill hole in the lower left corner. The absence of a front cover image is believed to have been done for a number of possible reasons: to prevent unauthorized retail sale, to lower costs, and to maintain a low profile for the still-controversial composers. 
The rear jacket is identical in every way to the original from 6 or 7 years earlier, and has some toning.
Other than the conditions noted, the jacket is in lovely shape with a light partial lower ring impression, and is in overall near Excellent condition.
