Following the breakup of the short-lived Fotheringay, Sandy Denny returned with her first post-Fairport solo album, The North Star Grassman and the Ravens. Produced with ex-bandmate Richard Thompson and longtime engineer John Wood, who would go on to produce the bulk of Thompson's work with Linda Thompson, the record consists of eight evocative Denny originals, along with the traditional "Blackwaterside" and a pair of borrowed rockers. There's a looseness and roominess to the sound, with acoustic guitar, piano, and Thompson's electric guitar leading the sparse backing from former members of Fotheringay, along with the occasional accordion, violin, pedal steel, and strings. Songs such as "Late November," "John the Gun," and "Next Time Around" are among her best, while "Blackwaterside," featuring Thompson's guitar and accordion, continues to show her mastery of traditional music

Track Listing:
Side 1: Late November (4:28) / Blackwaterside (4:12) / The Sea Captain (3:09) / Down In The Flood (3:19) / John The Gun (4:37)
Side 2: Next Time Around (4:26) / The Optimist (3:24) / Let's Jump The Broomstick (2:42) / Wretched Wilbur (2:37) / The North Star Grassman (3:27) / Crazy Lady Blues (3:21)

LABELS: CLEAN and BRIGHT labels with NO wear, NO writing and only moderate spindles
VINYL Visual: The vinyl still retains its DEEP, GLOSSY SHEEN with only light sleeve removal hairlines but no other marks
VINYL Audio: STRONG, VIBRANT AUDIO THROUGHOUT. There are NO scratches, NO sticks, NO jumps but there is a little surface noise, most noticeable between some (not all) of the tracks but nothing I found particularly intrusive on play-grading this BEAUTIFUL LP. The album plays to a high standard and must be very critically graded as VERY GOOD+ for audio. STILL SOUNDS VERY FINE INDEED. NOT over-graded in ANY way as I use STRICT RECORD COLLECTOR grading standards (please refer to my feedback and 'about me' page). VERY NICE COPY OF A PRETTY SCARCE LP - ESPECIALLY AS AN EARLY UK FIRST PRESSING
SLEEVE: The original gatefold cover is in EXCELLENT condition. It is CLEAN, VERY THICK and SOLID with just some light surface rubbing and ring to the back. The spine is straight and true with all text CLEAR and BOLD. Being matte, untreated, very thick and solid in construction this sleeve is incredibly prone to surface rubbing but apart from the ring to the back the whole sleeve is great shape and one of the finest examples I have seen in recent years
